Walker kicks off USMTS Memorial Day Weekend with victory at Deer Creek Speedway

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- USMTS racing action continued for the second stop of the weekend at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley. This racetrack has had a lot of trouble with the track being rough this season with all the early rain and cold weather so track promoters decided to get several different people out to the track to get it in shape for the USMTS race.

After three nights of extensive work on the track the track looked to be in great shape for the racing action on Saturday night. After all the hot laps were run the drivers said they were very impressed with what the Queensland family had accomplished for the weekend as the track was very smooth.

Fifty-seven cars checked in for the racing action and another new driver picked up his first win of the season. Darin Walker Bowling Green, MO a contender for the USMTS Rookie of the Year took the top spot after AFCO pole sitter Mike Sorensen motor let go.

Walker's win would make the fourteenth different winner this season.

The track was very smooth and hard that USMTS and Deer Creek tried something different with the track to see if we could make multiple grooves. This did not work and after discussions with track officials next time we will blade the rubber off the speedway trying to make for multiple grooves.

Walker's win did not come easy as four-time National Champion Kelly Shryock would sit back and wait for an error by Walker, but Walker would drive a flawless race and take the win. Shryock would settle for second with series rookie Mike Hejna coming home third. Rounding out the top five was Mike Chasteen and Eddie Martin.

Series point leader Tommy Myer would take a provisional to get in would settle for thirteenth. Haulmark Heat Races were won by Kelly Shryock, Darin Walker, Joe McBirnie, Mike Chasteen, and Bruce Angst.

The Harris Auto Racing B-mains were won by John Logue and Scott Drake.
