Hejna hits pay dirt at Tri-Oval Speedway

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. – The fifth event in the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship produced a fifth different winner Friday night as Al Hejna captured the Holley "A" Main at the Tri-Oval Speedway in Fountain City, Wis.

Polesitter Jake Neal led the first circuit of the 30-lap main event before giving way to AFCO Pole Award winner Dean Mahlstedt.

Mahlstedt's reign was cut short four laps later when mechanical woes sidelined the Clear Lake, Iowa, pilot.

Hejna—also from Clear Lake—assumed the top spot and paced the final 25 laps to claim his first win of the Hunt and third overall this season.

The "A-Train" was followed across the finish line by Tim Donlinger, who scored his second straight runner-up paycheck since winning at the U.S. 36 Raceway in Osborn, Mo., on Tuesday.

Corey Dripps matched his best finish of the season with a third-place showing, while Neal hung on for fourth ahead of Alan Mondus.

Dereck Ramirez, eight-time O'Reilly USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock, Zack VanderBeek, Scott Green and Jon Tesch completed the top-10.

Donlinger was sitting 11th in the points standings after failing to make the main event at the Belleville (Kan.) High Banks on Monday, but one win and two second-place finishes later, the Rochester, Minn., veteran has leapfrogged past nine drivers and into second in the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship—just 15 points behind VanderBeek (476 to 461).

Tesch is just one marker behind Donlinger in this wild and unpredictable title chase, while Shryock is just another five points back in fourth. Hejna is fifth with 447 points, followed by John Allen (420), Ron Ver Beek (411), Ramirez (406), Tommy Weder Jr. (398) and Mondus (357).

Four of the final 11 races will be held at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., where Donlinger has notched six USRA Modified wins this season and was the track points leader before opting to chase the O'Reilly USMTS crown one week ago.

The tenth O'Reilly USMTS National Champion will be crowned on the final night of the 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree, Sept. 18-20 at Deer Creek.

The O'Reilly USMTS National Tour returns to the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah, Iowa, tomorrow for some unfinished business. Mother Nature intervened on Wednesday, forcing the postponement of the 4th Annual Summer Challenge until Saturday.

Gates open at 5 p.m. and hot laps start at 6:30. Racing will immediately follow.

A full program featuring Hornets, USRA Hobby Stocks, Outlaw Hobbys, USRA B-Mods and USRA Stock Cars are also on tap.

The Upper Iowa Speedway is a 1/4-mile semi-banked clay oval located 1.8 miles east of US 52 on SR 9, then 1.0 mile northwest on Montgomery St., then northeast on E. Main St. (at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds).
