Tommy Myer wins Roughrider Classic

MINOT, N.D. -- Five thousand dollars is a big carrot to dangle in front of a race car driver. In fact, it's the second-biggest carrot drivers on the United States Modified Touring Series will race for this season. It's also the biggest single-show purse area IMCA Modifieds drivers will compete for.

The jumbo cash prize didn't lead to much fan-friendly racing early in Sunday's 40-lap A Main at Nodak Speedway. But it did lead to a big payday for Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn. Myer started inside on the second row, took the lead from Kelly Shryock five laps into the race and held on through five of the race's eight cautions to win the $5,000 grand prize on the final night of the Roughrider Classic.

"It's just awesome, to be able to compete at this level for $5,000," Myer said. "I took the whole summer off to focus on racing. I have a new car on the way, a new motor on the way, so this comes at the perfect time."

Shryock didn't walk away with chump change, either. The Forest City, Iowa, driver pocketed $3,000 for his runner-up finish. In all, USMTS drivers claimed the top eight spots in the feature. Minot's Wayne Johnson was the highest finisher of Nodak regulars, placing ninth. Underwood's Marlyn Seidler was 10th.

"That's typical of the way we race," Shryock said. "There's enough fast cars night in and night out ... there's a lot of give and take and everybody usually gives enough room for a good race."

Seven yellow flags in the first 17 laps not only kept the 26-car field bunched, it also kept pole-sitter Shryock or Myer from opening a substantial lead.

"It's very frustrating," Myer said of the early cautions. "You pick out a lane and get some good passing going on and then (the cautions) wipe all of that out."

Just as Myer began to open a lead on Shryock, the final caution of the race came out with 11 laps remaining. Shryock hung with Myer for the remainder of the race, but ran out of time and ran out of room to pass.

"You just want to get going so you can get in a rhythm," Shryock said. "Sometimes leading can be a disadvantage. Tommy had some wiggle room and he was able to pick his spot and make a pass."

Jason Laducer of Belcourt started on the outside of row two in the IMCA Stock Cars feature, worked his way to the front of the pack in one lap then outlasted Tim Snyder and a hard-charging Kelly Henderson.

The win was Laducer's first feature win of the season at Nodak.

Snyder hung on for his best finish of the season despite tangling with Williston's Steve Kihle midway through the feature. Snyder and Kihle got into one another on the front straightaway and spun off the track, but Kihle was charged with the yellow and was sent to the back of the field. Wyatt Olson placed fourth and Allen Fetzer of Max was fifth.

The hobby stock feature was run smoother than any other race of the night. Minot's Lonn Satren passed Aaron Turnbull with 11 laps remaining and pulled away from Greg Haman and Robbie Rosselli to win for the first time this year.

Haman finished second, Rosselli third, Davin Emmel fourth and Brandon Beeter fifth in a 20-lap caution-free race. Turnbull dropped out of the top five with 10 laps remaining when he spun into the wall in turn four, but managed to maintain control of the car and stay in the race.

Action will resume at Nodak Speedway on June 22 with a sprint cars special beginning at 7 p.m.
