Myer takes Jackson USMTS Modified Nationals
JACKSON, Minn. -- The United States Modified Touring Series invaded the Jackson Speedway for the second time this season this past Monday for the Jackson USMTS Modified Nationals. Taking the feature race wins were Tommy Myer, Blooming Prairie MN, USMTS Modifieds; Robb Nutt, Armstrong IA, 360 Modifieds and Steve Yarns, Jackson MN, Hobby Stocks.
Three different drivers led in the 30-lap USMTS Modified feature race. At the start of the race it was Todd Steuber, Fairmont MN getting the early lead. On lap two the races first caution came for a mishap in turn three. Involved were Jason Hughes, Colcord OK, Dwaine Hanson, Lakefield MN, and Greg Porth, Heron Lake MN. Hughes had major body panel damage and went in the work area and tore off the loose sheet metal. After the sheet metal was off Hughes’s car was a topless Modified. Hanson was done because of the mishap but Porth continued on. On the restart Steuber maintained the top spot holding off Shryock, Forest City IA and Jim Horejsi, Echo MN, and Jesse Drost, Worthington MN. On the next lap Drost got too high in turns one and two forcing him back deep in the field. On the next lap Tommy Myer had worked his way up in to the fifth spot and was looking for fourth. On lap six Myer put on his challenge looking for fourth. While working on the ninth lap of the race, leader Todd Steuber was passed by Kelly Shryock who was able to get by him in turn two. As the race was one third complete it was now Kelly Shryock out front followed by Todd Stueber, Jim Horejsi and Tommy Myer who was able to get by Roger Nielsen, for fourth. On the next lap it was Myer getting past Jim Horejsi for the fourth spot, and by the time the field was working on lap fourteen Stueber was going back-wards in the field. On lap sixteen the yellow flag came out when Jesse Drost stopped his car on the high side of turn four. On the restart, the race for the lead really heated up. Tommy Myer tried to put a move on Shryock to get the lead but Shryock held him off. However on the next lap Myer was able to get the lead at the line, getting by Shryock. On the next lap it was Shryock getting back by Myer for the lead on the back straightaway. Once again the battle continued on as Myer passed Shryock for the lead again on the next lap. On lap twenty the red flag came out when Brad McEwan, Storm Lake MN, took a wild looking flip in turns three and four. McEwan was ok but the car sustained heavy damage. On the restart Myer was able to keep Shryock and the field behind him. The running order at this point now saw Myer out front followed by Shryock, Steve Wetzstein, West Concord MN, and Jim Horejsi. On lap twenty-two Steuber was able to get by Wetzstein for fourth. The field continued on in that order until lap twenty-five when the motor let go in the Steuber machine. At this point in the race Wetzstein also retired to the pits with problems on his machine. The restart saw Myer out front followed by Shryock, Jim Horejsi, and Jason Hughes in his topless modified. On the restart Myers held off the field but it was Hughes getting by Horejsi for the third spot on lap twenty-seven. As the laps wound down the battle for the lead really heated up as Shryock and Myer raced side by side the entire last lap. With fans on their feet it was Tommy Myer who held off Shryock coming out of turn four and took the win. Kelly Shryock had to settle for second followed by Jason Hughes, Jim Horejsi, and Jim Richert, Comfrey MN. The B Feature was won by Tommy Myer with heat races going to Todd Steuber, Roger Nielsen, and Steve Wetzstein.
The 360 Modified feature started out with a five car mishap in turns one and two. On the restart it was Curtis Ratzloff, Mt. Lake MN, getting the early lead. Ratzloff led until lap three when the yellow came out for Ken Odegaard who stopped in turn four. On the restart Ratzloff held off the field but on lap six Ratzloff got too high in turn two allowing Robb Nutt, Armstrong IA and Mike Hansen to get by. Nutt now continued on leading the race for the next several laps. On lap twelve the battle heated up for second between Hansen and Ratzloff, but Hansen was able to stay in second despite the pressure from Ratzloff. When the checkered flag flew it was Robb Nutt taking the win followed by Mike Hansen, who came across the finish line backwards as he and Ratzloff continued their battle. Curtis Ratzloff was third followed by Terry Hanning and Oliver Kollofski.
The Hobby Stock Feature race saw a first time winner. From his outside pole position it was Steve Yarns getting the early lead. Mike Albert, Montgomery IA, Jeff Senne, Fairmont MN, and Darin Esser, Blue Earth MN, rounded out the top four in the running order. On lap four the battle for second really heated up among Senne, Esser, Adam McCoy, Brewster MN, Albert, Jerry Gronewold, Worthington MN, and Jeff Luhmann, Jackson MN, as those drivers were all going at it for second place. The battle continued on during the next lap for the top spots but a caution came out when Dan Strandberg, Worthington MN, stopped in turn four. Strandberg had to towed back to the pits and on the restart it was Yarns holding off Senne and rest of the field for the lead. As the race continued on it was Yarns up front followed by Senne, McCoy, Gronewold, and Luhmann. The field raced in this order for the next several laps until McCoy, who had gotten up into the second spot spun. McCoy continued on and no yellow was thrown but it put him deep in the field. When McCoy spun that allowed Luhmann to move into the second spot with Senne in third. When the checkered flag flew it was Steve Yarns taking his first ever feature race win. He was followed by Jeff Luhmann, Jeff Senne, Jerry Gronewold, and David Ross.
The next race at the Jackson Speedway will be this Saturday night for Fan Appreciation night sponsored by Johnston Auto Parts Stores. Hot laps will be at 6:45 p.m. with racing to follow.
