Shryock tops USMTS feature at Deer Creek
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- A perfect night for racing action fell over Southern MN on this Saturday night. A large crowd was on hand for the nights racing action at the Southern MN Speedplant which totaled the second largest crowd on hand during a regular racing night. The crowd was treated to some great racing action as 158 cars checked into the back gate for the evening with 52 USMTS modifieds on hand for the $2,000 to win feature event as they tune up for the big $10,000 to win Fall Jamboree on the 18,19 & 20th of September. The nights racing activities were sponsored by Quality Auto Sales of Rochester and Rick Utley a local Modified Lite driver added extra incentives to the Mod Lite class on his night.
The modified lite cars were on the track first for their feature event with Tate Bestor showing the way around the track. Behind him the field was battling three and four wide for positions as the first caution flew. On the restart Bestor pulled back out front followed by Jeff Jech in second. Ron VanRiper and Brian Kiehne battled side by side for the third spot. On the next lap the caution flew again with Bestor getting the jump on the restart as Kiehne and Jared Struss battled for the third spot. Jech tried to keep pace with Bestor but was not having much muck as Bestor was strong tonight. Bestor came home with the win followed by Jech and Kiehne. Jeff Jech by virtue of his second place finish came home with the track title.
The street stocks put on a great show tonight with only 1 caution to slow the races. Danny Hanson and Greg Erickson paced the field to the green flag. Erickson jumped out into the lead as the field was running three wide from fourth on back. Jeff Brauer, Travis Krause and Vince Corbin battled three wide for the fourth position as Jason Gabrielson moved under Hanson for the second spot. As the three pulled up on Hanson for the third spot, Brauer gained the third spot as Hanson started to drift back. With nine laps to go Brauer and Gabrielson battled side by side for the second spot followed closely by Krause. The caution came out with seven to go and on the start Erickson again pulled out front but this time was being pressured by Brauer for the top spot. Gabrielson was sitting in the third spot as Krause and Mark Zvorak battled for the fourth spot behind them. Zvorak and Krause moved past Gabrielson as he slid up the track in four. Erickson stayed low as Brauer looked for a way past him on the low side but to no avail as Erickson came home with the win. Travis Krause led the points title from night number 1 and never lost that spot.
The Midwest modifieds pulled onto the track with Larry Nelson and Chad Herman pacing the field. Herman took the top spot on the start as Brian Hernandez and Nick Kramer followed Nelson in a battle for the third spot. Fifth place on back saw the field running two wide for position as Hernandez moved under Nelson for the second position. On the next lap Hernandez worked under Herman in corner two and came around to the line in the first position. Mark Wytaske was running the #35 car tonight and worked into the fifth place with nine laps to go as the first caution flew. On the restart Henandez stayed out front as Wytaske moved outside of Nelson for the third spot. In the next corner Wytaske slipped up as Albert Wytaske moved into the third spot taking advantage of the mistake by the team car. With three to go Albert was in the third spot and moved outside of Herman for the second spot as they came to the line. Wytaske moved alongside of Hernandez on the final lap but Hernandez was not to be denied tonight and came home with the win. The motor in the #38 special car of Albert Wytaske was claimed by the 16F of Dan Fagerlind after the races. The claim was refused so Albert Wytaske was a DQ for the evening. Congratulations to the 52 car of Jesse Frericks on the track title in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds.
The super stocks seemed to have some problems tonight as the event was cut short after 6 caution flags were thrown on the field. On the start of the race Cole Queensland got the jump on Jason Johnson to lead the field to the stripe. The pack was three wide as they battled for positions throughout the field. With two laps down the first caution came out. Queensland led the field to the green flag as twelfth place starter Bill Clemens charge up around the outside to battle with Jon Duffy and Dennis Earney for the third spot With thirteen laps left in the event Jason Johnson woks under Queensland to take over the top spot as Clemens gains the third spot. On the final restart Clemens powered to the outside of Queensland to take over the second spot. Johnson held on for the win, with Nick Herrick coming home with the track championship and his choice of a new EZ-Chassis Super Stock or the use of a new Featherlite trailer for a year.
The 35 lap United States Modified Touring Series pulled onto the track next with the normal out of car driver introductions and the four wide salute to the fans with the American flags carried by the drivers. Les Duellman took the lead on the first lap with his outside front row starting position. Kelly Shryock moved into the second spot and at the line for the second lap was scored the leader as he moved outside of Duellman. Behind the front two there were some great battles going on with the drivers running three and four wide through the corners battling for position. On the straights most of the battles dropped back to three wide racing. Bruce Angst and Jay Ihrke battle side by side for the third spot early on. With 29 laps to go Kenny Gaddis moved into the battle with Angst and Ihrke. These three put on a great race for the next five laps until Gaddis moved into the third spot. Gaddis then moved into a battle with Duellman for the second spot as Shryock was pulling away from the field up front. With 23 laps left in the race the bottom of the track started to come in really well with Dan Chapman making his way forward. Bruce Hanford, Tony Fraise and Jay Ihrke were in a three wide battle for the fourth spot right behind Duellman. With sixteen laps to go Shryock moved into the lap traffic allowing Gaddis to start to make up time. With the first caution flying with thirteen laps to go, Shryock took back out front followed closely by Gaddis. The twenty third starting Mark Noble worked into the top eight on the restart as Corey Dripps flew around the outside of the track to move into the top five. Dripps and the bottom running Chapman moved past Ihrke in a great battle. Johnny Bone Jr. and Randy Zimmerman followed them into a battle with Ihrke for the fifth spot. At the line it was Shryock with the win, Gaddis second and Dripps third. The race was one of the best USMTS races that I have seen this year as the track was in great shape and the drivers ran some great lines. The racing surface held up all night and three and four lines of racing were available for racing action.
Next racing action at Deer Creek will be the fifth Annual Featherlite/USMTS Fall Jamboree on the 18, 19 & 20 of September. All indications from tonights racing action tell us to expect the same kind of action that weekend. Estimated car count for the USMTS modifieds would be 125 cars in the pit area that weekend looking to battle for the $2,000, $4,000 and $10,000 purses at the end of each nights racing activities.
