Chapman dominates USMTS Mods at Dodge County Speedway

KASSON, Mich. -- The weather was perfect on Sunday night at the Dodge County Speedway for night one of the two-day USMTS Modified Labor Day Special. 55 USMTS Modifieds were on hand, along with a great car count in the other three divisions also.

The first feature event of the evening was the WISSOTA Street Stock main event. Greg Erickson and Andy Solum led the field to the green, with Erickson looking to pick up his second feature win of the season at the Dodge County Speedway. Erickson took the early lead and Jason Gabrielson quickly jumped up to second and went after Erickson. But Gabrielson brought out the first caution with a rare spin in turn two while going for the lead.

When racing resumed, Jeff Brauer was on the move and worked his way in to second. Mike Loomis was also moving through the field and was in to the top five. Erickson remained strong out front, with Brauer on his rear bumper.

Jason Gabrielson was making a charge through the field after restarting at the back. Gabrielson was challenging Tom McEldowney for fifth as the laps wound down. McEldowney held off the challenge and was able to get by Loomis on the white flag lap to take fourth. Erickson picked up the win followed by Brauer, Chuck Nerland, McEldowney, and Loomis.

Next up was the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, which would be a very entertaining one. Nolan Bachman and Harlan Morehart shared row one and it was Bachman jumping out front. Jeff Ringenberg and Tim Siercks gave chase, and Siercks took over second from Ringenberg. Chad Herman stole third, while Siercks pressured Bachman for the lead. Greg Pfieffer Jr. challenged Herman for third and would take the position. Pfieffer then put some heavy pressure on Siercks for second, as Bachman continued to show the way. Siercks had close up on the rear bumper of Bachman, and Pfieffer was all over the rear bumper of Siercks.

Pfieffer was finally able to get by Siercks to take over second. Jesse Frericks and Joe Wernecke were making their way in to the top five also, and that is when the action up front would really heat up. Bachman was still out front, but Frericks and Pfieffer were in a heated battle for position, and Bachman would get caught in the middle. Pfieffer got underneath Bachman coming off of two as the white flag flew, and contact was made between the three cars of Pfieffer, Bachman, and Frericks. Bachman ended up spun on the backstretch, while Joe Wernecke capitalized on the situation, making his way to second. Pfieffer scored the much deserved win in a hard fought battle. Wernecke crossed the stripe second, Bachman was credited with third, while Siercks, and Nick Kramer rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Super Stock feature was next on the schedule. Tyler Rubin and Tom Chrest would share row one, but Bobby Swanson would surprise them bot and take the early lead. Rubin fought back and took the lead away, with Bill Clemens and Mark Oltjenbruns running second and third. The caution flew when Bob Clark spun in turn two, dropping Clemens back to third for the restart, behind Rubin and Chrest.

Chrest looked to the inside and took the lead from Rubin, while Clemens followed suit, moving past Rubin for second. Clemens would challenge Chrest for the lead and take the top spot away. Greg Alling was on the move after starting 10th on the field, and in to the top five. Alling worked his way in to third, and started to reel in Chrest and Clemens. Alling caught the leaders and got by Chrest for second. It looked like Alling was going to have something for Clemens but it was not to be. Clemens held on for the win, followed by Alling, Chrest, Ryan Siegle, and Dustin Nelson.

The fourth and final event of the night was the 40 lap USMTS Modified main event. Dan Chapman would start fromthe pole with Kenny Gaddis to his outside. After a couple aborted starts, Chapman grabbed the lead and it would be 40 laps non stop without a caution. It was apparent from the start that Chapman had the dominant car. Chapman's car was flawless on the bottom of the track and he immediately started to pull away from the field. Tommy Myer and Kelly Shryock both took provisionals and started dead last on the grid. But the two hard chargers would not stay there for long. Shryock and Myer were both on the move, and charging through the field. Both worked their way up to around 12 and 13th, and then it was Shryock who kept advancing.

Chapman was on cruise control out front, and continued to stretch his advantage, working the lap traffic to perfection. Todd Klees cracked the top five, and Shryock had fought his way to eighth. Dan Bohr was having a very strong run, and was trying to hold off Klees from taking over fourth. Dean Mahlstedt picked up the pace and took fifht from Klees. Shryock got as high as sixth, but out front it was still all Chapman. Bruce Angst was hanging tough in the top five, and had held down third for most of the race. Mahlstedt caught and passed Agst in the closing laps to take third, but nobody could touch Chapman, who had pulled out to nearly a half track advantage over Gaddis in second. Chapman lapped cars in to the top ten, and made it look easy in the process. Chapman crossed the line first in a dominating performance, followed by Mahlstedt, Gaddis, Angst, and Bohr.
