SPRING VALLEY, Minn. – Wednesday night's “Night of Victory” Shoot-Out at the Deer Creek Speedway turned out to be a victory for everybody: the drivers, the fans and the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kevin Harvick headlined the event, which feature four nationally-recognized racing figures, local racers and O'Reilly USMTS drivers in a charity event to help raise money for the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

Located in Randleman, N.C., the Victory Junction Gang Camp enriches the lives of children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses by providing life-changing camping experiences that are exciting, fun and empowering, in a safe and medically sound environment.

The Shoot-Out consisted of 20 drivers in a 20-lap invitational to kick off the 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Southern Minnesota speedplant located in Spring Valley, Minn.

Along with Harvick, NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Landon Cassill also competed with some of the best in Modified racing, along with top Drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr. in his dirt track racing debut. Joining the crew in the announcers booth for the event was former NASCAR crew chief and current FOX Sports analyst Larry McReynolds.

Earlier in the day, more than 600 fans took part in the “Night of Victory” V.I.P. Celebration. In addition to grandstands tickets and access to the hospitality tent, each participant was able to join in a "town hall meeting" with Harvick, Cassill, Gittin and McReynolds, followed by autographs and the opportunity to bid on great NASCAR memorabilia, plus a delicious meal catered by the Minnesota Pork Council.

The other 17 drivers in the Shoot-Out were randomly chosen from several categories:

• Scott Green, Al Hejna and Brandon Kenny were selected from drivers with perfect attendance in the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship.

• Dereck Ramirez and Bryan Rowland were selected from drivers with perfect attendance in the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series.

• Jason Cummins, Jay Ihrke, Mike Sorensen, Terry Timmerman and Nate Wasmund were selected from a pool of weekly USRA Modified drivers at the Deer Creek Speedway.

• Randy Timms earned a sponsor provisional from Featherlite Trailers; Brady and Shawn Peterson were selected as sponsor provisionals by 61 Marine & Sports.

• Steve Arpin was selected as a past Featherlite Fall Jamboree main event winner. Arpin won the opening night race at the 2006 Featherlite Fall Jamboree, which was actually staged on Sunday after the Thursday night program was rained out.

• Kelly Shryock, Bob Timm and Steve Kosiski were selected at random from those participating in Wednesday's practice.

Around 7:30 p.m., the drivers congregated on the front stretch to draw for starting spots. It was then that the "exhibition" race turned into an actual contest as Harvick announced that he would personally give $2,500 to the winner of the race.

Deer Creek Speedway and USMTS officials also guaranteed each driver a minimum of $10 per lap ($200 for completing the race) for participating, of which most drivers reciprocated by donating their winnings to the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

Nineteen cars started the race as Gittin crashed his Modified during practice. At the drop of the green flag, polesitter Brady Peterson jumped out to the lead as he and Timmerman distanced themselves from the pack.

Within a couple of laps, however, Cummins moved into second place and was challenging Peterson for the lead when the first of six cautions waved as Cassill spun in turn 4.

On the restart, Cummins powered around the outside of Peterson to take the lead on lap 5 while hard-fought battles were the order of the day throughout the field.

Despite several cautions, Cummins was never challenged and went on to take the victory ahead of Sorensen, who held off 18th-starting Shryock over the final eight laps of the race. Timm came from 19th to finish fourth and Green rounded out the top-5.

Harvick wound up right where he started in 14th, while Cassill was the last of the cars still running at the end in 16th.

THE JAMBOREE CONTINUES ...

Slated for Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 17-20 at the Deer Creek Speedway, the Featherlite Fall Jamboree is the undisputed marquee event for America’s most talented dirt Modified drivers, and this year’s event is shaping up to be one of the biggest ever as 102 of the “Who's Who” of dirt Modified racing have already pre-entered for this year’s installment. Another 14 additional new names were on hand for practice on Wednesday night, with even more expected on Thursday.

Featuring the O'Reilly USMTS National Tour, the star-studded field of superstars consists of drivers come from 10 different States (Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin) and one Canadian Province (Ontario) as they converge on the tiny rural town of Spring Valley, Minn. for a possible $12,000 to win over three big days.

Along with the O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds, the four-day event will also feature WISSOTA Midwest Mods, with more than 50 early entries already in. Combined, the two classes will compete for a total purse of nearly $200,000 in America's dream date for Modified fans.

Three complete shows are on tap for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval, with a practice session and the “Night of Victory” Shoot-Out to kick off the festivities on Wednesday.

On Thursday, a field of 30 cars will start the O’Reilly USMTS main event, which carries a $2,000 top prize and pays a minimum of $200 to start—a hefty top prize, indeed, but that’s only opening day at The Jamboree!

Grandstand gates open at 4:00 p.m. and the first green flag waves at 6:00.

Tickets for the 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree may be purchased online at www.deercreekspeedway.com or by calling toll-free 877-DCS-RACE, and will also be available on race day. For track or campground information, call (507) 346-2342 or email info@deercreekspeedway.com.
