Hughes tops opening night of 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. – The best of the best in Modified competition converged on the Deer Creek Speedway Thursday for opening night of the 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree. Up against a field of 112 entries, Jason Hughes was the best of the best of the best on this night as he led the final 20 laps of the 30-lap main event.
The win was worth $2,000 to the Westville, Okla. veteran as he looks to become the first repeat Jamboree champion on Saturday. It was his fourth career victory at the high-banked 3/8-mile oval, and second this season.
Dereck Ramirez jumped to the lead from the outside of the front row as the green flag waved on the 30-car field. A caution on lap 9 slowed the field and Hughes was able to sneak by the Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar Rookie of the Year contender on the restart.
While Hughes led the remainder of the laps, the crowd was kept entertained with three- and even four-wide battles throughout the pack. Eighth-starting Al Hejna found the extreme high side of the racing surface to his liking and moved into second on lap 13. Two laps later, the "A-Train" was challenging the leader when his Modified went into a spin exiting turn 4.
Polesitter Steve Wetzstein inherited the runner-up spot and held his position for the final 15 laps, holding off Jon Tesch, 15th-starting Kelly Shryock and Tim Donlinger at the finish.
Ramirez finished sixth, while Jared Landers finished seventh after starting 20th. Tommy Weder Jr. collected an eighth-place paycheck, Tommy Myer was ninth and Lone Star State star Chris Brown completed the top-10.
Donlinger continues atop the points standings in the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship as he seeks his first O'Reilly USMTS National Championship. Shryock, however, helped his cause to claim his ninth crown in ten years by trimming Donlinger's advantage from 25 to 15 points (1121 to 1106).
Tesch also narrowed the gap slightly and sits third with 1068 markers. Zack VanderBeek saw his title hopes take a hit with a 25th-place finish and dropping to fourth in the standings with 1044 points. Hejna is fifth with 940 markers, followed by Weder (938), Ramirez (932), Brandon Kenny (854), Alan Mondus (833) and Jake Neal (809).
Only Donlinger, Shryock, Tesch and VanderBeek are mathematically alive to claim the 2008 O'Reilly USMTS National Championship, which will be decided at the conclusion of Saturday night's finale at the Featherlite Fall Jamboree.
NOTEBOOK ...
ROCKIN' ROOKIE RACE: The battle to become the Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar Rookie of the Year is even closer. Brandon Kenny leads Dereck Ramirez by 14 points (1117 to 1103) with two events remaining. While Kenny was absent from a pair of events earlier this summer, Ramirez missed four shows in the Mo-Kan Region, which may prove to be the difference between winning and losing. Ramirez is also second in the "Just Say Yes" Dustin Duncan Memorial Rookie of the Year standings for the O'Reilly USMTS Southern Series. The Woodward, Okla. youngsters are also in close quarters in some other areas. In the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship, Ramirez is seventh and Kenny is eighth with 78 points separating the two. In the O'Reilly USMTS Southern Series, Ramirez is sixth while Kenny is just ten points back in seventh.
SKYROCKET TRIPLES UP: For the third straight year, Skyrocket Chassis has clinched the Builders Championship for the O'Reilly USMTS National Tour. Located in Fertile, Iowa and co-owned by Kelly Shryock and Eric Kirschbaum, Skyrockets have captured 29 of the 52 checkered flags this season. Seven different Skyrocket drivers drivers have won, including Shryock (11), Tim Donlinger (5), Zack VanderBeek (4), Jason Krohn (4), Brad Waits (2), Brad Pinkerton (2) and Jake Neal (1). Also for the third straight year, Hughes Chassis has clinched second to the Skyrockets in the Builders Championship. Third through fifth have been clinched, respectively, by Ramirez Race Cars, Harris Auto Racing and Specialty Motorsports.
COMP CAMS CLINCHER: In 21 of the 52 O'Reilly USMTS National Tour events this season, Sput's Racing Engines has provided the power under the hood, and has clinched the 2008 COMP Cams Engine Builder of the Year Award. Owner Mark "Sput" Spatenka has been machining since 1986 before opening his business in Owatonna, Minn. in 1992. Some of the drivers who have driven a Sput's-powered Modified into victory lane this year include Kelly Shryock, Tim Donlinger, Jon Tesch, Jason Krohn, Tommy Myer and Brad Waits. Clinching second through fifth in the COMP Cams EBotY rankings are Mullins Race Engines, Wanders Automotive & Machine, A.S.I. Racing Engines and JR Motorsports.
THE JAMBOREE CONTINUES ...
Friday’s menu will kick off with the annual Jamboree Golf Tournament in the morning, followed by a second night of screaming on-track action. The O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds will again have a 30-car feature field, with the winner’s share of the purse doubled to $4,000 and a minimum of $300 going to each driver making the main event. Fans, drivers, crews and families will put a lid on Friday’s festivities with the annual Karaoke Night … open to everybody. Gates open at 4:00 p.m. with racing scheduled to start at 6:00.
On Saturday, the enormous explosive finale will feature the hottest dirt Modified pilots in the nation battling for a spot in the 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree main event for the O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds. A field of 30 cars will start the main event three-wide and 10 rows deep as drivers battle for a $6,000 top prize and at least $700 just to take the green flag. And if that wasn’t enough, non-qualifiers will have a chance at one of the 24 spots in the Non-Qualifier "A" Main, which carries a $2,000 top prize and pays $300 to start—that’s more than most Modified races pay to win their “big one.” Fans can begin storming the gates at 3:00 p.m. and the mud starts flying at 5:00.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, breakfast will be served by the Bear Creek Church Men’s Club in the hospitality area from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Thursday's meals will be served as a free will donation while Friday and Saturday is just $6 per person. All proceeds benefit the Bear Creek Men’s Club. Open to all … you don’t want to miss this great home-cooked opportunity!
WISSOTA national points will be awarded all three nights for the WISSOTA Midwest Mods. Thursday's main event paid $300 to the winner, Albert Wytaske. Friday will pay $400 to win and $70 to start and Saturday's winner will earn $500 with $80 guaranteed to start the 24-car main event.
Last, but certainly not least … this year’s Featherlite Fall Jamboree will be the final event in the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship. Not only will we produce a 10th Featherlite Fall Jamboree winner, but we will also crown the ninth O’Reilly USMTS National Champion after Saturday night’s finale.
The Deer Creek Speedway is a 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval located off of I-90 at Exit 209, then 11.3 miles south on US 63 (0.7 mile north of SR 16).
The Featherlite Fall Jamboree is made possible by the great racers and fans, as well as our sponsors: Featherlite Trailers, 61 Marine & Sports, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Dirt Doctor Trucking, L & D Ag Service, Casey's General Stores and O'Reilly Auto Parts.
