Donlinger secures O'Reilly USMTS National Championship with impressive victory at 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree Tim Donlinger won the 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn. Donlinger secures O'Reilly USMTS National Championship with impressive victory at 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. – Back in early August, Tim Donlinger had a decision to make: stay home to race at nearby Deer Creek Speedway where he had won six features during the season and was the points leader, or head to Southern Missouri to compete for a chance to become the 2008 O'Reilly USMTS National Champion.

Donlinger finished sixth in the first race of the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship, then rain washed out the next two events while his track championship at Deer Creek became an impossibility. The second race of the 'Hunt' saw Donlinger's engine go up in smoke at the famed Belleville (Kan.) High Banks and he found himself sitting 11th in the points.

At that point, it would have been easy to give up, load up the racecar and head home. Instead, the team installed a new powerplant and headed down the highway to the next event in Osborn, Mo. The decision paid off with a win and catapulted Donlinger back up to seventh in the standings, 49 markers behind points leader Kelly Shryock.

During the next 38 days, Donlinger was nearly flawless. The veteran from Rochester, Minn. captured two more wins and finished no worse than seventh in the next 10 events leading up to Saturday for the final night of the 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway and the final event in the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship.

Donlinger came into Saturday's show as the points leader, ahead of Shryock by a mere 16 points. As it had been the previous two nights, the pits were packed with more than 100 entries featuring the most impressive résumés in all of dirt Modified racing. Among all of those stars, however, Donlinger found a way to shine brightly in front of the record sell-out Deer Creek Speedway crowd.

But just like he did back in early August, Donlinger had to do it the hard way.

After watching Shryock deliver an impressive run from 13th to third in the fourth heat race to earn a spot in the top-12 for the start of the 30-car, 30-lap main event, Donlinger came out in the eighth and final heat race starting ninth. He narrowly avoided a first-lap crash that saw Scott Mullen roll his Modified and knock out three others, including 2006 Featherlite Fall Jamboree winner Chad Kinder. Donlinger was up to third by lap 4, but a smoking left rear tire caused by a bent fender eventually went flat and forced him out of the race.

“That was devastating,” Donlinger later recalled. “We thought it was all over at that point.”

Donlinger found himself starting 12th in the first Real Racing Wheels "B" Main that would transfer just two drivers to the evening's Championship "A" Main. As the O'Reilly USMTS points leader, Donlinger was guaranteed a spot in the "A" Main either way, but provisional starters do not receive coveted passing points in the main event so "earning" his way into the big dance was pivotal.

No problem.

In less than 18 laps, Donlinger had disposed of drivers such as Dereck Ramirez, Tommy Weder Jr., Tommy Myer, Jared Landers and Johnny Bone Jr. to win the race and earn a spot in the 40-lap nightcap.

After a fiery presentation to introduce those that would compete in the 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree main event field, the drivers climbed into their Modifieds to battle it out.

Donlinger found himself in the 19th starting spot with a treacherous three-wide start upcoming, and up against 30 of the best drivers ever assembled for one contest. Getting a top-5 finish would be a huge task. Getting a win seemed impossible.

No problem.

From the outside of the front row, Jon Tesch jumped to the early lead but the first of six caution flags slowed the action after just one lap when John Allen tagged the turn 4 wall. Three more yellow flags would wave before another lap could be completed, and the second one was monumental.

Shryock, who started ninth, found himself sideways as the pack roared into in turn 1. Although he was able to keep moving, the chain reaction caused Jason Cummins and Alan Mondus to collect each other and stop on the track. Although Shryock pulled off a remarkable save, he had to pull into the pits to for repairs and was forced to restart the race at the tail of the field. The next restart saw a third straight caution when Texan Chris Brown got together with Allen at the bottom of turn 4.

The fourth time was the charm as the field stayed clean through the next lap with Tesch and Jason Hughes testing each other on the high-banked 3/8-mile oval. Hughes was able to sneak by Tesch to lead lap 16, but Tesch got a strong run around the high side of the racetrack to reclaim the lead on lap 17 as the pair began navigating heavy lapped traffic.

The next caution waved for Dean Mahlstedt who was stopped at the top of turns 3-4 with terminal mechanical troubles. A post-race disqualification in his heat race dropped Mahlstedt to last place for his "B" Main start, but the defending Featherlite Fall Jamboree winner clawed his way to a runner-up finish to earn a berth in the main event and had snuck by 12 cars before retiring from the feature race.

On the restart, polesitter Steve Wetzstein powered in front of Hughes to take second place while Brad Waits fought for fourth with teammate-for-the-weekend Al Hejna. After capturing the regular season track championship at Deer Creek, Waits sold his racecar and had planned to be a spectator for the Featherlite Fall Jamboree until Hejna offered Waits the seat in his back-up ride.

The final caution waved on lap 20, with Tesch continuing to lead Wetzstein, Hughes and Waits. But the fifth spot now belonged to Donlinger, who had motored past 14 competitors using the low side of the racing surface. Meanwhile, Shryock was up to 12th at the halfway point after restarting in 30th place after his first-lap miscue.

Hughes got around Wetzstein on the restart to reclaim the second spot while Donlinger hugged the inside berm to move past Waits for fourth. Two laps later, Donlinger got around Wetzstein for third as the crowd went wild in anticipation of another classic Featherlite Fall Jamboree finish.

With Tesch continuing to flirt with the wall up high, Hughes in the darkened middle groove and Donlinger on the bottom of the track, the trio exited turn 2 door to door on lap 26, then came past the flagstand the same way to complete the 27th lap.

Now firmly in second, Donlinger came to stripe alongside of Tesch but was unable to make the pass. One lap later, it was Donlinger's nose to hit the stripe first. He led lap 30 too but Tesch laid down a perfect lap the next time around to regain the top spot.

As they crossed beneath the flagstand on lap 33, Donlinger again was scored as the leader. He never relinquished the lead again during final seven laps and paced Tesch to the checkered flag with a two car-length advantage.

Donlinger left nothing to chance as he claimed his first Featherlite Fall Jamboree victory and the title of O'Reilly USMTS National Champion.

“We didn't come into this thing with any expectations,” Donlinger said in victory lane. “This is the toughest field I've ever seen, but we thought if we could just run our race we'd be alright. I've got a great team and they gave me a great car night after night.”

"You've got a pretty good driver there, Ron," an onlooker told car owner Ron Frericks while flashbulbs lit up the winners circle celebration. "No," he replied. "I've got the best driver."

Donlinger's fourth triumph during the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship was worth $7,000, including an additional $1,000 from Hanson Tire Service of LeRoy, Minn. Along with the $10,000 that goes with winning the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship, the win brought Donlinger's weekend take to just under $20,000.

Hughes, the 2005 Featherlite Fall Jamboree champion and Thursday night's feature winner, took home a third-place paycheck, while Friday's winner, Zack VanderBeek, came from the 21st starting spot to finish fourth. Wetzstein hung on for fifth to record his second top-5 finish of the weekend. Sixth went to Waits, Mike Sorensen grabbed seventh and Shryock battled back to finish eighth at the end.

Jason Krohn ended his year-long reign as the O'Reilly USMTS National Champ with an ninth-place finish after starting 23rd. Hejna hung on to complete the first 10 positions.

Finishing second to Donlinger in the final standings (1,333 to 1,275), Shryock wound up one spot better than last year but will have to wait until 2009 in his quest for a ninth O'Reilly USMTS National Championship. Tesch nipped VanderBeek by two points (1,254 to 1,252) to take third while Ramirez got by Hejna on the final night to finish fifth with seven points to spare (1,098 to 1,091). Tommy Weder Jr. wound up seventh with 1,042 points, followed by Brandon Kenny (982), Alan Mondus (966) and Jake Neal (919).

In the closest Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar Rookie of the Year battle in the ten-year history of the USMTS, Kenny edged Ramirez by 10 points (1,163 to 1,153) to earn the title and the accompanying $2,500 paycheck. Bryan Rowland made it a sweep of the top-3 spots by Woodward, Okla. drivers, with Joey Schaefer finishing fourth and Rodney Sanders fifth in the rookie rankings.

Prior to Saturday's finale, 17-year-old Ryan Gustin pocketed $2,000 as he captured the 30-lap Non-Qualifiers "A" Main after a crowd-pleasing battle with second-place finisher Neal Eckhart and 20th-starting Scott Green, who grabbed third. Jared Landers finished fourth after starting 16th while Justin Boney rounded out the top-5. Nate Wasmund turned in an impressive performance by finishing sixth after starting 30th out 30 starters.

The Featherlite Fall Jamboree was made possible by the great racers and fans, as well as our sponsors: Featherlite Trailers, 61 Marine & Sports, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Dirt Doctor Trucking, L & D Ag Service, Casey's General Stores, O'Reilly Auto Parts and Hanson Tire Service.

Although the curtain has closed for 2008 on the O'Reilly USMTS National Tour, several big shows still remain for the O'Reilly USMTS Southern Series. Up next will be the 10th Annual Topless Modified Nationals on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3-4 at the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark. The event pays $2,000 to win Friday night and $5,000 to the winner on Saturday.
