Daniels wins first USMTS feature, pockets $10,000 at Fall Jamboree

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Deer Creek Speedway rolled out of the day program and into the normal Saturday night event. The track work began about 4:30 in the afternoon to tear up the racing surface from the afternoon racing and after 2 hours of work the track was in the best shape that one could expect from the amount of laps ran on the track for the past two days. It was a very smooth track but moisture was difficult to stay in the track. By feature time the track was black and slick from top to bottom and all of the feature events were very interesting.

Deer Creek Speedway would like to extend their thanks to all of those who made the event possible this year. Featherlite Trailers, Lanmark Properties, IITI, Valley Featherlite, Yaggy Specialized Trucking, Sun Place Tanning, Cobra Transportation, Tendar Heart Treasures and Schmidt Trucking. There were a ton of people who worked relentlessly behind the scenes to bring the show in and they are very appreciated also. The people cooking the food, pig roast and working the pit gates and stands are very important to the success of these shows. The tag team announcing of Todd Narveson, John Westgard, and Lon Elkie who had the crowd laughing throughout the dead time during the racing action. They did a wonderful job and you could truly tell they enjoyed themselves during the action. The track prep crew who spent relentless hours working the track all day after an 1-1/2" of rain that fell postponing the Thursday night show. They also worked until after sunrise on Saturday morning after the late ending 2:00 show on Friday night and were ready to tear the track up to give the drivers the best surface between the two Saturday shows. Skinny Paulson and the Dirt Doctor Trucking company who sponsored the dash for the local racers so that one of them could make it into the show plus loaded dump trucks full of rock and gravel to spread in the pit area do eliminate the mud for the drivers.

The show was a success by all means and when considering the hand that the fans, crews and drivers were dealt with for track conditions during the Saturday portion of the show the racing was very good. Of course none of this would be a success without the 360+ cars that showed up from 13 states during the two days of racing action, the 1,000's of people in the stands and the pit area. They all stayed positive and enjoyed the long hours and days of racing. They enthusiastically showed their support of the event with great crowds all three shows and many were there without much sleep.

Because of the support of all of these people Featherlite Trailers, Deer Creek Speedway and the United States Modified Touring Series proudly announced before the start of the main event that the 6th annual Featherlite/USMTS Fall Jamboree will be held at Deer Creek during the month of September in 2004. Next years event will include an increased purse for the Featherlite/USMTS Modifieds. This season the payout for modifieds was over $100,000 and next seasons event will be larger. We look forward to this event growing every year and hope that this relationship will continue for many years to come.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds pulled onto the track for the $1500 to win event. Joe Wernecke jumped out to the early lead with Brad Waits in hot pursuit. Jim Arnold followed Waits past Wernecke and into the second spot. Jimmy Davis was flying and working around the top five. With fourteen to go Davis pulled up to battle with Arnold and Waits. Davis took the top spot, as the caution flew again. Joe Wernecke worked back up into the second spot following Davis around the track. Throughout the field there was a lot of great two and three wide racing action. George Sniezek and Duane Dunbar battled for the fourth spot as Davis pulled out into a full straight away lead with eight to go. Dennis Jones was rapidly making his way forward after going to the rear for an incident and was inside the top 10 at the halfway point of the event. Davis was dominate in his run tonight for the $1,500 first prize, Dennis Jones came home second but was docked 2-spots for jumping the start giving the spot to Wernecke.

What can you say about Bill Clemens in the WISSOTA Super Stocks when it comes to the money shows at Deer Creek. Last year during the Jamboree Clemens took home the $1,000 on the first night and came up 1-ft short of winning the $1500 on the second night. Clemens found himself on the pole for tonight's feature and checked out on the field to take home the win. Two cautions pulled the field up to him over the rest of the field. Mike Weber followed Clemens for the first few circuits of the event with Johnny Erickson and Brandon Jensen battling for position behind him. Jensen pulled away from Erickson and under Weber to take over the second spot at the midpoint of the event. Dave Mass was circling the track from his tenth starting spot and slowly picked off cars on his way to the front. At the finish it was Clemens with the $2,000 paycheck with Jensen second.

The 5th Annual Featherlite/USMTS $10,000 to win 50 lap feature pulled onto the track last. After the drivers introduction the 34 cars lined up in a three wide formation to battle it out for the paycheck. The Queensland family, USMTS and Featherlite Trailers agreed in principal before the start of the feature to hold the 6th Annual Featherlite/USMTS Fall Jamboree at the track again next year. The three wide formation is a tricky deal to get going and last year the race went 7 laps before there were any problems. Tonight we were not that lucky as the W1 car of Tim Wilson spun in front of the middle of the front row crossing in front of the field. Russ Olson and Doug Hillson were done for the night because of the incident. On the second start Jason Connoyer got together with another driver and pulled up in corner four. The third attempt at the three wide start worked to perfection and the cars ran two and three wide for the first five laps before stringing out and getting more into single file with some double wide battles. Willy Kraft took the early lead with Dan Daniels running second and Johnny Bone Jr. in third. With fourty three laps to go Bone moved under Daniels for the second spot. Daniels then started to make the outside groove start to work and Bone moved up to block him so Daniels slid back under Bone for the second spot. Tony Fraise and Kelly Shryock battled for the fourth spot. With twenty eight laps to go Kraft got into the lapped traffic with Daniels right on his bumper looking for a way around. The lapped traffic started to slow up Kraft as the front six cars started to run nose to tail. Shryock worked under Fraise for the fourth spot. With ten laps to go Daniels started working harder to get under Kraft and after a couple attempts of not getting under him enough Daniels pulled alongside going into three and held the spot. Shryock and Dripps battled side by side for the fourth spot as Tommy Myer and Tony Fraise battle for the sixth spot. At the line it was Daniels with his first ever USMTS win and the $10,000 paycheck.

Up next for Deer Creek Speedway is the Annual Fall Festival race held on Saturday the 27th. The event will be for National Points and all classes will be running. There will be normal pay and admission prices for the speedway with the Late Model drivers on hand will have a $30.00 car entry and will be running for $1,000 to win. We hope to see everyone at Deer Creek for the final event of the season.
