LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Defending event champion Mike Bowers of North Little Rock, Ark. picked up where he left off last year with a victory on opening night for the 10th Annual GRT Race Cars Topless Modified Nationals at the I-30 Speedway.

With 72 cars and drivers checked into the pit area, the win was worth $2,000 to Bowers, who captured last year's finale on the high-banked quarter-mile clay oval.

Two-time race winner (2005-06) Tim Crawley of Benton, Ark. redrew the pole position for the 25-lap main event, and paced the first 14 laps before his Modified had trouble and gave way to Bowers, who led the final 11 laps.

O'Reilly USMTS Southern Series points leader Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla. started seventh but was up to third and battling with the leaders late in the race when he suffered a flat tire and had to dive into the pits for repairs.

Morgan Bagley of Longview, Texas took home the runner-up paycheck while Jack Sullivan of Greenbrier, Ark. finished third. Eight-time O'Reilly USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa raced from 11th on the starting grid to finish fourth while USMTS rookie Dereck Ramirez came from 10th to fifth at the checkered flag.

Sixth through tenth, respectively, went to Steven Whiteaker Jr., Jared Landers, Zack VanderBeek, Steve Holzkamper and Chris Shown.

The first lap of the race saw outside front row starter Larry Hull of Old Appleton, Mo. slip off the track and roll his machine. Luckily, he was not injured in the crash.

Hughes continues to lead the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series points, leading Holzkamper by 72 markers (1355 to 1283). Tommy Weder Jr. sits third with 1197 points, followed by John O Whittington (1030), Paul White (1028), Ramirez (994), Shane Hebert (956), Bagley (928), Bryan Rowland (918) and Brandon Kenny (895).

On Saturday, a $5,000 top prize awaits the winner of the feature race, with a guaranteed $500 to start the Holley "A" Main. Pit gates will open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5, hot laps are at 6:30 and racing starts at 7:30. Sprint cars will also join the racing card.

Past winners of the GRT Race Cars Topless Modified Nationals include Charlie Armstrong (1999-2000), Sullivan (2001), Skeet Amason (2002), Wayne Brooks (2003), Kevin Salter (2004), Crawley (2005-06) and Bowers (2007). This year marks the first time the USMTS has sanctioned the popular event.
