USMTS Modifieds set to open Thunderhill season
MAYETTA, Kan. -- The United States Modified Touring Series will return to the Thunderhill Speedway in Mayetta, KS March 19-20 for a two-day show that will feature several of the top modified drivers doing battle at this 3/8 mile high banked clay oval track.
USMTS visited the Thunderhill Speedway for a two-day show last season and Justin Boney and Tommy Myer each picked up wins at the speedway.
This race will feature several of the same drivers doing battle with $2000 going to the Holley A-main winner on Friday evening and $3,000 to the winner of the main event on Saturday.
Super Stocks and Factory Stocks will also be running with the modifieds at this show with a complete show each night.
This will be the first of three visits to the Thunderhill Speedway for the USMTS as a return visit in June with the season finale being held in October.
A good field of modifieds is expected for this event. Some of the expected drivers include: Tom Charles, Danny Charles, Kerry Davis, Brian McGowen, Levi McGowen, Whitey Folk, Kerry Davis, John Allen, Billy Robison, Greg Metz, John Logue, Klint Pursley, Steve Kosiski, Kelly Shryock, Tommy Myer, Jason Krohn, Steve Wetzstein, Scott Baker, Jason Krohn, Justin Boney, Dustin Boney, Neil Eckhardt, Dean Mahlstedt, J.P. Karpowicz, Johnny Bone, Jason Hughes, Zack Vanderbeek, Rodger Peck and Corey Dripps to name a few.
Gates will open at 3:30pm on Friday with hot laps set for 6:30 and racing to follow. Saturday gates will open at 2pm with hot laps slated at 4:30 and racing to follow. A complete show each night will keep fans entertained with heat races, B-mains, and A-mains each night for all classes. For more information call the USMTS office at 515-832-7944.
This will be a must see show as the last visit to the speedway saw Tommy Myer pass Johnny Saathoff on the last lap and pick up the win. More than fifty cars expected for this event with drivers from seven states expected.
Racers and fans alike will have a week to catch their breath after the high speed USMTS Modifieds visit the track. A practice session is scheduled for March 27 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm, before the regular race season kicks off the following weekend, Saturday, April 3.
A cornucopia of events are scheduled for the 2004 season. Besides the regular racing events featuring Modifieds, Superstocks, Factory Stocks, Pony Stocks and Cruisers; Thunderhill will host a number of special event races.
The United States Modified Touring Series is scheduled to make three stops at Thunderhill this season, and will feature some of the best modified drivers in the country such as Kelly Shryock, Justin Boney, and Tommy Myer.
The Topless Outlaw Racing Association Late Models are on tap for five visits to the high banked speedway. The topless warriors regularly attract over 30 cars per race, with drivers such as Larry McDaniels, Delbert "The Iceman" Smith, Steve Kosiski, and Kyle Berck expected to attend many of the races.
Sprint Cars will visit the track on five occasions, in the form of the O'Reilly Midwest Sprint Car Series and Midwest Outlaw Lightning Sprint Cars. The MSCS 360 Sprint Cars are a self starting car, and run lap times equal to that of push start Sprints. The MOLS Sprint Cars are scaled down versions if the larger Sprints, but fly around the track with amazing speed and agility.
The National Championship Racing Association Modifieds will bring their traveling show to Thunderhill on two dates. This regional series based out of Wichita typically attacts some of the largest car counts of the season at every track they visit, as well as some of the best drivers in the region. John Allen, Brian Franz, and Connor Ward are some of the drivers to be expected.

Regular race prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $3 for children 7 to 13, and children 6 and under are free with a paid adult.
