BAYTOWN, Texas – Johnny Bone Jr. captured his second O'Reilly USMTS Southern Series win of the season Friday as he topped the 35-lap Holley "A" Main during the second of three nights at the 2nd Annual Texas Winter Nationals at the Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas.

The 42-year-old from Pea Ridge, Ark., used a late-race pass of Randy Timms to lead the final 11 laps en route to a $3,000 payday.

Timms jumped out to a three car-length advantage from his pole position at the start of the main event and paced the first 24 circuits before giving way to Bone, who last won on June 7 at the Fast Trax Speedway in Chatham, La.

Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, finished third behind Wheatland, Okla.'s Timms, while Chris Henigan of Marshall, Texas, finished fourth ahead of Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D.

Chris Brown, Jack Sullivan, Kelly Shryock, KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Rodney Sanders and AFCO Pole Award winner Steve Holzkamper rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Despite a disappointing 15th-place finish, O'Reilly USMTS Southern Series points leader Jason Hughes needs merely fire his engine Saturday night to clinch the 2008 title -- his career-first under the USMTS banner. Hughes possesses a 109-point lead over Holzkamper (1773 to 1664) heading into Saturday's finale where a driver could mathematically claim a maximum of 126 points. But when he pulls in the gate, Hughes will earn the minimum 45 points for showing up and thus securing the crown.

Thursday night's winner, Tommy Weder Jr., is third in the standings with 1596 points, solidly ahead of Dustin Duncan Memorial "Just Say Yes" Rookie of the Year points leader John O Whittington with 1387 points. Paul White is fifth with 1349 markers, followed by Dereck Ramirez (1313), Morgan Bagley (1286), Scott Green (1240), Shane Hebert (1228) and Dustin Hyde (1169).

Action continues Saturday night for the finale of the 2nd Annual Texas Winter Nationals and curtain-closer on the 2008 season for the O'Reilly USMTS Southern Series.

Saturday's finale will pay an O'Reilly USMTS Southern Series record $4,000 to win with at least $300 guaranteed for each starter.

Gates open at 4 p.m. and the mud starts flying at 6:30.

Limited Mods will also be competing for $1,000 to win. Eddie Martin of Stilwell, Okla., won Friday's night's Limited Mod main event.
