Shryock, Bone pick up USMTS wins at Scotland County Speedway

MEMPHIS, Mo. -- The J&J Ag Travel Connection USMTS modified special at the Memphis, MO racetrack had to deal with some weather this past weekend as more than 2 inches of rain fell on Tuesday night leaving the track in a very soft condition making the practice scheduled for Thursday night to be called off. Track prep crew worked all day on Friday to make the track in as good as condition as possible and racing went on as scheduled. Kelly Shryock continued his hot streak in the series this season picking up his sixth win of the early season.

This win did not come very easy as Tony Fraise give Shryock everything he had, but would have to settle for a second place finish. Fraise would have to settle with a runner-up finish and would pocket the $1500 paycheck for that. Rounding out the top five on this night was Willy Kraft, Tommy Myer, and Mike Hejna. Forty-seven cars checked in for the racing action and Al Hejna, Willy Kraft, Mike Hejna, Zack Vanderbeek, and Jason Hughes each picked up Isky Racing Cam heat race wins.

This set the stage for the Harris Auto Racing B-mains and Tommy Myer and Ryan Ruter each picked up wins. Al Hejna would pick up the AFCO passing points award after starting tenth and winning his heat race. Hejna would redraw eight on the redraw, with Willy Kraft redrawing the number one spot and Dan Chapman to the outside of Kraft. Shryock would start the race sixth and move to second on the very first lap. Shryock would follow Kraft for the first six laps before taking the top spot from Kraft.

Kraft and Fraise would battle for several laps before Fraise would take the second spot away and start reeling in Shryock. Shryock would almost lose the lead to Fraise on lap 23, but Fraise would fall back into second and ride the final two laps there. Officials noticed Shryock’s fuel cell dragging after going across the scale and Fraise said it did that with three laps to go and he was just riding waiting for something to happen, but it never did so we just settled for second tonight. Zack Vanderbeek picked up the win in the Stock Car class pulling double duty tonight. Racing would resume on Sunday after drizzle would force USMTS officials to cancel the Saturday night program.

Sunday

Johnny Bone made the best of the Sunday picking up the win and pocketing the $3000 paycheck after battling Tony Fraise on the last lap for the win. Racing resumed on Sunday afternoon and some of the travelers left after rainy looking clouds was still in the area on Sunday morning, but by 1pm Mother Nature started clearing the skies and the track was in much better condition for drivers on Sunday evening. Thirty-two drivers checked in for the racing action Sunday and Isky Racing Cam heat races went to Dan Chapman, Mike Hejna, Jason Hughes, and Tony Fraise. Dan Chapman picked up the AFCO passing points award and made the best of it tonight and even drew the number one frisbee to get the AFCO pole. Tony Fraise would start to the outside of Chapman. Bone would get a good jump and take the lead coming out of turn two with Chapman following Bone. Tommy Myer would move into second by lap two with Tony Fraise following Myer. A caution on lap ten would bunch the field back together and Tony Fraise would get by Myer at the start and start working on Bone. These two drivers would race side by side for several laps before Fraise would take the top spot on lap twenty-five. This was not the only battle going on as Tom Goble, Jason Hughes, and Kelly Shryock were battling for the fourth spot for several laps. Hughes would have mechanical trouble by lap twenty-four ending his evening. By lap twenty six Shryock would have a left rear tire going down and would have to settle with a fifth place finish. Back to Fraise and Bone the battle would continue and Fraise would take the white flag as the leader and Bone would move to the outside in turns 1-2 getting a good run going into turns 3-4 Bone would slip a little letting Fraise push up a little coming out of turn four and Bone would sneak to the inside as the two touched Bone would move ahead and beat Fraise by a bumper. Myer, Goble and Shryock would round out the top five. USMTS south region action will continue this weekend with three stops in the Missouri, and Oklahoma area. Friday the series will move to the Outlaw Motor Speedway in Muskogee, OK, with a stop at the Salina Highbanks in Salina, OK on Saturday evening before making a first ever appearance to the Monett Speedway in Monett, MO on Sunday. Matt Greiner picked up the win in the stock car class on Sunday. Weekly racing action will get underway on Saturday for the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, MO this Saturday featuring B-mods, Hobby Stocks, Cruisers, Mods, Stock Cars, and Late Models for the first points race of the season. Racing action will get underway with hot laps at 6pm and racing to follow. Bentz GM Country will be the sponsor of the weekly program this Saturday at the speedway.
