Chapman tops USMTS Mods at the Deer Creek
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- I arrived at the track at 1:00 and they were still pumping water off the inside edge of the racetrack in corners 1 & 2. This was completed about 2:00 and then the packing began. While doing all of the track prep work they were only able to get the upper half packed in and then the blade was having troubles pushing the heavy clay towards the infield so the skid loaders came out and starting pushing the slop to the infield. With a schedule start time of 6:00 the crew did everything they could to get the work done but was not able to get the final packing done until almost 8:00. The first green flag waved at 8:15 with the 126 car - 4 class events waved the final checkers just before the 12:00 hour. It was a long night but the racing action was fast and furious especially during the USMTS feature. Special thanks to all who worked so hard on the track all afternoon and early night to get the racing action in and to Schmidt Trucking and Brokerage of New Richland for the sponsoring of the racing action.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks took to the track first for the feature racing action. Jim Gullikson crossed the line with the lead at the completion of lap one. Danny Hanson and Jeff Brauer were in a good battle for second. Hanson took control of the spot with twelve laps to go with the caution flying on the next lap. Shaun Wehlage, Travis Krause and Brauer battled three wide for the third spot on the restart. Krause slowly worked under Wehlage for control of the second spot on the next lap. Wehlage and Hanson battled for the third spot with Wehlage gaining control as Tom McEldowney moved up to battle with Hanson. The two moved up to battle with Wehlage again for the third spot. Krause was able to gain a little ground on Gullikson but still ended up about 3 car lengths short of a challenge as Gullikson came home with the win.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds had an excellent race with Joe Bunne using the pole position to take the early lead. Some fierce three and four wide battles for position were being held for the fourth spot on back. Brian Hernandez and Ron Houdek ran side by side for the second spot for two laps until Albert Wytaske moved into the race to make a three wide race for the position. Houdek pulled away from the battle and moved up to race with Bunne for the top spot. With eleven laps to go Houdek took over the top spot as Bunne started to loose the handle on the car and slid back through the field. Hernandez took the second spot with Wytaske in third. Dale Mathison was working his way through the field until Hernandez and he got together ending their runs with four laps to go. Houdek held off the challenges of Wytaske after the restart to take home the win.
The WISSOTA Super Stock race was shortened five laps due to excessive cautions. Cole Queensland started from the pole and took the early lead. Dave Haberman and Troy Langowski battled side by side for the second spot as most of the field ran two and three wide for position. With sixteen laps to go Langowski took over the top spot as twelfth starting Dave Mass was running up against the wall and had worked into the top five. During the green flag racing there were some great battles through the field. On the last restart Mass and Haberman battled for the second spot with Mass gaining the spot but Langowski continued to show his dominance the last couple races as he held onto the lead for his second feature win in a row.
The USMTS Spring Challenge race was a phenomenal race. Jason Krohn took the early lead with Shryock following into second. Mike Hejna, Jason Hughes and Dain Schultz were in a three wide battle for third. 1st caution flew after the completion of lap 1. Krohn took the point on the restart, shortly after the restart Dan Chapman moved to the top side of the track and found his groove working into the top five and pulled alongside of Hughes and Mahlstedt for a three wide battle for fourth. Up front Shryock was putting the pressure on Krohn as the two battled for the lead. Another restart with 25 laps to go found Mike Hejna working to the outside of Shryock into the second spot and three laps later worked outside of Krohn to take the top spot. Steve Wetzstein found the Chapman groove and worked into the top 5 with 20 to go. Krohn worked back under Hejna as Chapman worked outside in a three wide battle for the top spot. Hejna regained the advantage as Hughes and Shryock were locked in a battle for the fourth spot. With sixteen laps to go Chapman powered by Hejna on the top side to take over the lead. Hughes slid up the track after moving into third allowing Shryock and Krohn to move past him. With eight laps to go Mike Sorensen worked under Hughes for the fifth spot while Tommy Myer and Ron Schreiner were locked in a great side by side battle for seventh. The final caution flew with five laps to go. On the restart Chapman held the lead while Sorensen slipped in two allowing Hughes, Myer and Schreiner to work past him. Coming back through two these guys all battled hard for the spot as Bruce Hanford and Al Hejna joined into their battle. The checkers flew with Dan Chapman taking home the win, Shryock second and Krohn third.
Next weeks racing action will be sponsored by Sorensen Restoration and Custom Woodworking. Special thanks to track sponsors Valley Transportation, Baudoin Oil Co, Essig Insurance Agency, John Hardy's BarBQue, Expert Insulation, KWWK for the live remote, K.C. Lawncare, Ken Stevens - SnapOn. The Treehouse and A&W of Austin. Without their help the racing would be very difficult.
All six classes will be in action next week at Deer Creek Speedway
