Shryock wins USMTS at Hamilton County Speedway


WEBSTER CITY, Iowa -- Kelly Shryock pulled away from the field in the closing stages of the United States Modified Touring Series stop at Hamilton County Speedway for the win on Tuesday, June 8, 2004.

Kelly Shryock (Fertile, IA), who started fifth, made himself a player right at the start of the 40-lap A-Main. Through the early stages of the A-Main, Shryock battled Johnny Bone Jr. and Tommy Myer for the top spot. On lap sixteen, Shryock worked underneath Bone coming off of turn four for his first lead of the night. The final yellow flag of the night came on lap thirty-one. When the green returned, Shryock pulled away in the AMSOIL, AREO Race Wheels, Shyrocket Chassis number “31” for the win by six car lengths.

Johnny Bone Jr. (Pea Ridge, AR) started on the pull and commanded the top spot holding off Shryock and Myer for the first sixteen laps. After that, Bone held off Myer for second until his car slowed with mechanical problems on lap thirty ending his night in the Klushman Racing Components, BMS Racing Engines, Hoffman Chassis number “12B”.

Mike Hejna (Clear Lake, IA) ran fourth through most of the 40-lap A-Main watching the battle up front between Shryock, Bone, and Myer. After reaching the half-way mark of the feature, Hejna started to close in on the lead trio. After a yellow on lap thirty-one, Hejna used a strong move to move into second. Hejna would race his Budweiser Skyrocket number “7II” to the checkered flag and finish second.

Jason Hughes and Tommy Myer finished third and fourth respectively. Bruce Hanford who started nineteenth drove home in fifth. Kevin Pittman, Mark Noble, John Logue, Jon Tesch, and Adam Larson rounded out the rest of the Top 10.

After a travel day, the USMTS head north for a four-day swing through North Dakota. Thursday, June 10th it will be a stop at Jamestown Speedway (Jamestown, ND). On Friday, June 11th, the tour heads to Dakotah Speedway (Mandan, ND). Then on Saturday and Sunday, it is a two-day visit to Nodak Speedway (Minot, ND).
