Holzkamper hauls in “Havoc at The Hummer” hardware

HUMBOLDT, Kan. – The USMTS Casey's General Stores National Tour returned to the Humboldt Speedway on Sunday for round 2 of the 4th Annual “Havoc at The Hummer.” A warm afternoon greeted the fans at the quarter-mile high-banked clay oval in Southern Kansas, and a heated main event closed out the weekend.

A fast field of 53 dirt Modified drivers representing 11 different States filled the pit area, including NASCAR veterans Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace for the second day in a row.

Johnny Fennewald of Appleton City, Mo., drew the pole position for the 40-lap main event and led the first seven circuits before Fort Scott's Brian Bolin grabbed the top spot on a restart. Bryan Rowland of Woodward, Okla., slipped past Fennewald one lap later and closed the gap on Bolin.

The pair raced nose to tail for the next 22 laps before Rowland was able to get his nose beneath Bolin exiting turn 2. The two cars entered turn 3 side by side and neither driver wanted to be the first to lift his foot off the gas pedal. The hard entry caused both drivers to slide up the track and a tap from Rowland was all it took to send Bolin into a spin atop turn 4 and bring out the caution flag.

Officials signaled both drivers to restart the race at the tail of the field, giving the point to Steve Holzkamper for the double-file restart.

Over the final 11 laps, Holzkamper powered away from the competition to claim his first win of the season. The win was worth $2,000 to the Gentry, Ark., pilot, who struggled to a 16th-place finish the night before.

The reversal of fortune also found Saturday night's winner Jon Tesch, who managed just a 12th-place finish on Sunday.

Fellow Razorback racer Johnny Bone Jr. of Pea Ridge, Ark., was able to snag the runner-up spot from Fennewald to give Holzkamper's TRE Race Cars a one-two finish.

Dustin Boney came from the 10th starting spot to finish fourth with Gary Langworthy Jr. fifth. Sixth through 10th, respectively, went to Scott Green, Jason Hughes, Dereck Ramirez, Jason Friesen and Chad Wheeler.

Continuing his strong early season start, Boney left Humboldt with the points lead in the Bear Tire Mo-Kan Region thanks to 20 passing points earned in 80 laps of main event racing over the two days. Bone's runner-up finish launched him into the runner-up spot of the standings, trailing Boney by 10 points (191 to 181). Tesch is third with 179 points, followed by Hughes (175), Green (173), Sanders (166), Holzkamper (165), Langworthy (165), Wheeler (160) and Kelly Shryock (145), who was the first casualty in Sunday's main event.

COMING EVENTS …

Next Friday and Saturday, March 20-21, will see the USMTS Southern Series in action for the first time in 2009 with the rain-delayed running of the 10th Annual GRT Race Cars Topless Modified Nationals at the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark. Mike Bowers won the opening night event back in October, but Mother Nature forced the postponement of the event. Track and USMTS officials decided to stage a complete two-day program for this coming weekend.

Friday's show will pay $2,000 to win and Saturday's finale carries a $5,000 top prize. Drivers who were entered in the October event are already pre-entered for this weekend's show. New entries are invited to participate as well. On both nights, pit gates will open at 5 p.m., grandstand gates will open at 5:30, hot laps will begin at 7 and racing starts at 7:30. Stock Cars complete the racing card on Friday and Mini-Sprints will be part of the program Saturday. The track will also host a test ’n’ tune practice session on Thursday night.

The I-30 Speedway is a 1/4-mile high-banked clay oval located 7.0 miles southwest of Little Rock on I-30 to County Line Rd. (Exit 126), then south to frontage road, then east (SSR). For more information, call 501-455-4567 or check out www.i-30speedway.com on the World Wide Web.

Up next for the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Tour will be another pair of Bear Tire Mo-Kan Region events.

On Friday, March 27, the touring titans travel to the LA Raceway in La Monte, Mo., for the fifth straight season and a $2,000-to-win show. Pit gates open at 3 p.m., grandstand gates open at 4, hot laps are at 6:30 and racing starts at 7. Local Street Stocks will also be on the racing card. The LA Raceway is a 3/8-mile semi-banked clay oval located 3.5 miles west of SR 127 on Hwy Y. For more information, call the LA Raceway office at 660-620-1152 or the track hotline at 660-347-5222 on raceday or visit them online at www.laraceway.com.

On Saturday, March 28, the series invades the Thunderhill Speedway in Mayetta, Kan., for the 7th Annual “Kansas Spring Fling” and another $2,000-to-win barnburner. Pit gates open at 2 p.m., grandstand gates open at 4, hot laps start at 5 and the first green flag waves at 5:30. Local B-Mods and Factory Stocks will also be on the racing card. The Thunderhill Speedway is a 4/10-mile high-banked clay oval located 14.6 miles north of US 24 on US 75 to 142nd St., then 2.2 miles west. For more information, call the Thunderhill Speedway office at 785-966-2575 or the track hotline at 785-966-2844 on raceday or visit them online at www.thunderhillmayetta.com.
