Hughes comes up huge at Junction Motor Speedway

McCOOL JUNCTION, Neb. -- Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., captured the 35-lap main event Tuesday night as the United States Modified Touring Series stars and cars made their second stop of the season at the Junction Motor Speedway.

Hughes bided his time on the 3/8-mile oval, picking off cars one by one before sliding past local favorite Tony Gregg of Hastings, Neb., with seven laps to go and pulling away to the checkers.

Gregg, who led on two occasions for a total of 16 laps, held on to claim the runner-up paycheck, while Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., finished third. Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Johnny Bone Jr. of Pea Ridge, Ark., rounded out the top five finishers.

The main event had runaway written all over it when George White took the lead from Gregg on lap 9. The Ft. Worth, Texas, veteran raced from last to first to win his heat race earlier, then wasted just eight laps to blow past seven cars in the feature race. Driving away from the field on lap 14, mechanical problems in the rear end of White's Modified brought him to a stop at the top of turn 4, ending his night.

Gregg bested Hughes in the third heat race, while White, Kevin Peters and Bone Jr. also won their heats. "B" main checkers flew for Dean Mahlstedt and Kelly Shryock., who raced to a seventh-place finish at the end of the main event.

The USMTS continues their Husker Nation Tour with stops at the Speed Bowl in Red Cloud on Wednesday night, followed by a visit to the Thayer County Speedway in Deshler on Thursday.

In Tuesday's Open Stock Car action, Travis Dickes stormed from the back of the pack to take the victory in the feature race. Josh Grape, Shane Stutzman, Mark Hooker and Bob Zoubek completed the top five.
