Hughes rides again, dominates USMTS Modifieds at Humboldt Speedway
HUMBOLDT, Kan. -- Somebody really ought to fix Jason Hughes up with his own key to Humboldt Speedway. After all, every time the Colcord, Oklahoma Modified ace shows up, he drives like he owns the place.
Such was the case Friday night, as Hughes and 39 other Modified pilots battled through five heat races and two "B" mains to start 24 of the fastest Modifieds in the country in the 40 lap USMTS "A" main event.
The battle that ensued can only be described as awesome. Bruce Hanford of Davenport, Iowa started on the pole, and led the initial laps of the race, until being overhauled by DeSoto Kansas driving sensation Dustin Boney. Hughes, meanwhile, started on the seventh row inside and advanced steadily through the field, working traffic and apparently bidding his time. By lap 20, the leaders were waist deep in lapped traffic, and Hughes began his quest in earnest. There was one yellow flag during the entire race, an it fell before lap number one was completed. Thus, much to the delight of his many fans in the Humboldt Speedway capacity crowd, Jason Hughes propelled himself from a 13th starting spot to feature winner in 40 non-stop laps. Hanford eventually claimed the runner up spot, with Corey Dripps of Cedar Falls, Iowa third. Another Humboldt favorite, Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa finished in fourth, while Blooming Prarie, Minnesota driver Tommy Myer rounded out the top five.
Prior to the main event, a memorial "Dash For Cash" was run in the memory of the late Tom Folk. This race featured eleven drivers, including one "promoter's choice" entry. Eddie Martin of Stillwell, Oklahoma was the race winner, and recieved a commerative trophy from members of Tom's family. All 11 drivers were rewarded with cash from a purse donated by local merchants and the Folk family.
Of course, Modifieds were only a part of Friday's line up at the Hummer.
Todd Kidwell and Dusty Marvin locked horns for a classic duel in the Street Stock feature, a race that Kidwell won only after tracking down the elusive Marvin and executing a daring mid-turn pass. Jed Rice remained a constant threat to win through the entire show, but had to settle for third. Tyler James took fourth, with Clint Drake fifth.
Meanwhile, Jon Westhoff was able to fend off a determined effort from Chase Sigg and record his second Front Wheel Drive feature win of the season. Newcomer Michael Reed secured third, followed by Kyle Wiles and Austin Joyce.
Keith Simmons engaged in wheel to wheel combat with Jeff Cleaver and Tim VanGotten, and fought his way to yet another Bomber feature win.Simmons was followed by Cleaver and VanGotten, with Todd Kidwell fourth and Chris Ellsworth fifth.
Jack Simmons continued his recent domination of the E-Mod class, as he outpaced Derrick Wilson, Tim VanGotten, Jerry Kustenborter, and Mike Letterman.
Coming up this Friday, July 2nd, it's the annual Humboldt Speedway Modified Extravaganza, a show that pays a whopping $2,000 to win in the Modified feature. All other classes will compete as well, and a giant post race fireworks display will start the holiday weekend off with a bang!
