Sullivan regains USMTS Southern Series points lead with Boothill Speedway win

GREENWOOD, La. – Jack Sullivan's roller coaster weekend came to a stop Sunday night with the 33-year-old from Greenbrier, Ark., sitting in victory lane at the Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La.

Sullivan came into the three-race weekend as the USMTS Southern Series points leader. While battling for the lead in his heat race Friday, Sullivan spun out then ended the night with a disappointing 19th-place finish in the main event, dropping him to third in the standings.

On Saturday he failed to qualify for the feature race and had to use a provisional to make the show. Things began to turn around at that point as Sullivan raced from 23rd on the starting grid to 9th at the end of the 40-lapper.

Sunday was Sullivan's night as he dominated his heat race, drew the pole position for the Sunoco "A" Main, then led all 25 laps en route to his first USMTS Southern Series win of the season.

The $2,000 triumph catapulted Sullivan back to the top spot in the East Region rankings for the USMTS Southern Series.

Competing in just his third USMTS start, Garrett Durrett took home the runner-up paycheck while Morgan Bagley notched his third straight top-10 finish of the weekend in third. Defending USMTS Southern Series champion Jason Hughes took fourth, Steven Whiteaker Jr. was fifth, sixth went to Wes Armstrong, Kelly Shryock took seventh, Saturday's winner Johnny Bone Jr. was eighth, ninth went to Scott Green and Chris Henigan rounded out the first 10 at the checkered flag.

Sullivan now holds a 423-406 advantage over Steve Holzkamper in the USMTS Southern Series East Region points standings. Rodney Sanders sits third with 384 markers, followed by Bone (383), Whiteaker (372), Hughes (368), Shryock (366), Bagley (363), Dereck Ramirez (353) and B.J. Robinson (332).

The KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award went to Michael Robertson, who started 21st and finished 16th in a main event where passing was at a premium.

In the Dustin Duncan Memorial “Just Say Yes” Rookie of the Year points battle, Jason Armstrong leads brother Wes by just seven points (119 to 112). Robinson is third with 90 points, while Patrick Linn, Chad Davis and Robertson are tied in the fourth spot with 84 apiece.

The COMP Cams Engine Builder of the Year standings has A.S.I. Racing Engines of Lubbock, Texas, leading the pack while Hughes Racing Chassis of Westville, Okla., leads a Chassis Builders Championship battle that has five manufacturers virtually neck and neck for the lead.
