Myer, Brands, Boumeester, and Strandberg take wins at Jackson

JACKSON, Minn. -- On a great night for racing a total of 79 car checked in for action which featured the United States Modified Touring Series on Johnston Auto Stores night. The feature race winners were Tommy Myer, Blooming Prairie MN, USMTS; Randy Brands, Boyden IA, IMCA Stock Cars; Jared Boumeester, Waseca MN, 360 Modifieds; and Dan Strandberg, Worthington MN, IMCA Hobby Stocks.

The 30-lap USMTS feature saw three different drivers lead throughout the event. On the drop of the green it was Johnny Bone, Jr., Pea Ridge AR, getting the early lead from his outside pole starting spot. Bone would lead through the first lap when the caution came out for Al Hejna, Ventura IA, who stopped on the high side of turn two. On the restart Bone would hold off the field, but putting some major pressure on him were Jason Krohn, Slayton MN, and Kelly Shryock, Fertile IA. On lap four Shryock would charge from the third spot and grab the lead from Bone. Bone would then ride in the second spot for one lap when Krohn would get by him on lap five. On lap six, with Shryock still up front and Krohn in second Tommy Myer would work his way up to the third spot, after starting in the eighth position. The field would now race with Shryock up front followed by Krohn and Myer for the next couple of circuits when Myer was able to get by Krohn for second on lap nine. The leaders would race in this position through lap eleven when the next caution came out for Richie Tosh, Batesville AR, who slowed in turn two and on the back straightaway. As the leaders were circling the speedway, third place running Jason Krohn brought his car to the pit area. It was reported that he had lost the left rear spring on his car on lap two. Krohn would make the necessary repairs and return to the speedway. On the restart Tommy Myer was able to get by Shryock in turns one and two for the lead. But it was all for nothing as the caution came back out for Krohn who lost the left rear spring again. This time Krohn parked his car and watched the rest of the race. On the restart Shryock held off Myer in one and two but he was unable to do so in turns three and four as at the line Tommy Myer was the races new leader, putting Shryock back to second. The running order now saw Myer up front with Shryock in second and Jon Tesch, Watertown SD, now in the third spot. The leaders ran in this order through lap fourteen when Brad McEwan, Storm Lake IA, moved by Tesch for third on lap fifteen. Two laps later the races final caution came out when Jon Tesch spun his car off the track in turn two. Tesch would call it a night and pull into the pit area. On the restart Myer would hold off the field but Shryock was unable to hold off McEwan as he moved into the second spot, putting Shryock back to third. The top three would see Myer up front followed McEwan and Shryock. They would run in this order for several laps. By the nineteenth lap Al Hejna, who brought on the yellow flag on lap one, would work his way all the way back up through the field and would challenge Shryock for the third spot. Finally on lap twenty-three Hejna would get by Shryock and move into the third spot. Hejna would than set his sights on the leaders. Myer would continue to maintain the top spot with McEwan in second and Hejna in third through the white flag lap. While working on the last lap Hejna was able to get by McEwan, and at the finish line it was Tommy Myer picking up the win followed by Al Hejna, Brad McEwan, Kelly Shryock and Mike Spaulding, Bemidji MN. The B Features went to Doug Hillson, Blooming Prairie MN, and Craig Scott, Rosemount MN. The heat race winners were Tommy Myer, Bruce Hanford, Davenport IA, Jason Krohn and Johnny Bone, Jr.

Two different drivers led in the 15-lap Stock car feature race that was only slowed by one caution. On the start it was James Brower, Sanborn IA, getting the early lead from his outside row two starting spot. Brower would maintain his lead for several laps with Doug Barglof, Sioux Rapids IA, riding in the second spot and Stefan Sybesma, Sanborn IA, in third. On lap three Brands would work his way into the third spot after starting eighth. The next laps saw Brower up front with Barglof in second and Brands third. On lap seven Brands would move into the second spot putting Barglof back to third. On lap nine the caution came out for debris on the front straightaway. The restart saw Brower hold the field off but only for one lap as Randy Brands made his move into the top spot on lap eleven putting Brower back to second. The field would run in this order to the end and at the checkered flag it was Randy Brands picking up the win followed by James Brower, Doug Barglof, Roger Tripp, Marathon IA, and Jerry Coopman, Mankato MN. The heat races went to James Brower, Jerry Coopman, and Roger Tripp.

A very nasty looking wreck stopped action on the opening lap in the 360 Modified feature. On the opening lap Mike Albert, Montgomery IA, Adam Thurmer, Jackson MN, and Mark White, Spencer IA, all got together on the back straightaway. Albert rolled several times while Thurmer was projected high into the air and nose dived into the track. Both Albert and Thurmer were ok but their cars sustained heavy damage. Mark White received very little if any damage to his car and he was able to restart. On the restart Jared Boumeester would grab the early lead from his pole starting spot, while Matt Van Muyden, Heron Lake MN, settled into the second position, with Jeff DeVary, Estherville IA, in third. The field would run in this order for several laps. On several occasions Scott Knudson, Elkton SD, would try to get third but DeVary would hold him off. As the race began to wind down, on lap ten Knudson did get by DeVary for the third spot one time but DeVary would reclaim the spot the next lap and Terry Hanning, Armstrong IA, would also get by Knudson putting him back to fifth. When the checkered flag flew it was Jared Boumeester picking up his second win in a row at the Jackson Speedway. He was followed by Matt Van Muyden, Jeff DeVary, Terry Hanning, and Scott Knudson. Heat races were won by Jeff DeVary and Adam Thurmer.

Three different drivers led in the 10-lap Hobby Stock feature race. At the start of the event several cars got together in turns one and two which rebunched the field for a complete restart. On the restart it was Chas Zech, Spencer IA, getting the early lead from his outside pole starting spot. Zech’s lead didn’t last long as he got high in turns one and two allowing several cars to get by him. That handed the lead over to Drew Barglof, Sioux Rapids IA, who led for the next three laps surviving one restart while his was leading. On the fifth lap Dan Strandberg made his move into the lead getting by Barglof for the lead. On the sixth lap the races final caution came out when Barglof stopped in turns one and two. On the restart Strandberg held off the field and went on to pick up the win. He was followed across the line by Kevin Bortvit, Estherville IA, Jeff Luhmann, Jackson MN, Chad Carlson, Ormsby MN, and Aaron Hansen, Estherville IA. Heat races went to Troy Matheason, Estherville IA, and Kevin Bortvit.

Racing action will continue this Saturday, August 28th at the Jackson Speedway. It will be Poppe’s 66 race night and all six classes of cars will be on hand including both classes of Sprints, Mods, and Stocks cars. Hot laps will be at 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow.
