Bone buries USMTS foes in Monett go
MONETT, Mo. – Johnny Bone Jr. ran down early leader Dustin Boney just before the halfway points of the main event, then drove away to score the victory Sunday night as the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour invaded the Monett Speedway in Monett, Mo.
The most prolific passer during heat race action among the 39 entries was Boney, which earned him the AFCO Pole Award. He then drew the pole position for the start of the Sunoco “A” Main.
At the drop of the green flag, Boney beat outside front row starter Jackie Dalton to the first turn and led the first lap of the 40-lapper with Tony Jackson Jr. and eight-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock following into the second and third spots.
Bone, meanwhile, missed the invert by one spot and started the feature race in the ninth spot. Nonetheless, his year's of experience racing at “The Grand Ole Lady” helped him find the quickest way around the 3/8-mile semi-banked oval.
Following a caution on lap 6 for a three-car melee, Bone began his charge to the front as he picked off one spot every two laps. Bone got around Shryock for second on lap 15, then began to close the gap between himself and Boney.
Bone blasted into the lead three laps later and went unchallenged the rest of the distance to record his first USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour win of the season. With two wins this season already in the USMTS Southern Series, the $2,000 triumph gave Bone his third win of 2009 and his second career USMTS win at Monett, joining Shryock and Hughes as two-time winners at Randy Mooneyham's facility.
Boney and Shryock held on for second and third, respectively, while Terry Phillips — another former winner at Monett — raced from 14th to 4th to earn his second PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award of the season.
Bryan Rowland came from 11th to finish fifth, followed by Dereck Ramirez, Rodney Sanders, Zack VanderBeek, NASCAR veteran and TV personality Kenny Wallace and Jeremy Payne.
The victory propelled Bone into the runner-up spot in the Bear Tire Mo-Kan Region points and significantly narrowed the gap between himself and Hughes (656 to 639). Hughes, who also leads the USMTS Southern Series standings on the strength of six wins, dropped out in the early stages of Sunday's main event with mechanical problems and wound up 22nd out of the 24 starters.
Sanders is third in the standings with 615 points, followed by Shryock (614), Boney (587), VanderBeek (578), Rowland (550), Ramirez (536), Chad Wheeler (535) and Scott Green (528).
