Shryock caps off season with win at Scotland County Speedway

MEMPHIS, Mo. -- Kelly Shryock came into the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway with the 2004 United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) title already wrapped up and had one goal in mind, which was to win. Kelly managed to do that, along with Ryan Cook (Stock Cars), Mark Preston (B-Modifieds), Abe Huls (Hobby Stocks), David Hudson (Cruisers) and Dennis Schulte (Hornets).

Forty-two USMTS Modifieds signed in to due battle for the $3, 000 to win top prize, with Mark Burgtorf, Darin Walker, Mitch Way, Brad McEwan and Darin Thye picking up wins in the Harris Auto Racing Heat races. While Dean Mahlstedt and Zack VanderBeek claimed wins in the Midwest Motorsports semis. Way would claim the passing points title and redrew 3rd for the 35 lap feature, while Burgtorf drew the AFCO pole. Burgtorf took advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1, with Kelly Shryock following him into second. Burgtorf would hold off all challenges from Kelly thru several cautions. But a restart on lap 25 proved to be bad for Burgtorf, as Kelly jumped to the outside of him on the restart to take the lead. Burgtorf didn't give up as he ran with Shryock for the final 10 laps side by side. But Shryock would hold off all challenges from Burgtorf to pick up the win. Jon Tesch came from 10th to finish in 3rd, Michael Long started 12th and finished 4th, with Tony Fraise claiming the hard charger award, as he started 18th and finished 5th. Corey Dripps came home 6th, Johnny Bone Jr started 16th and finished 7th, Steve Stewart came from 20th to finish in 8th, Ron VerBeek was 9th, with Bruce Hanford coming from 22nd to round out the top 10.

Brian Mitrisin led the field of 21 Stock Cars to the green flag in the 15 lap feature, with Jason Cook challenging him in second. Mitrisin would hold the top spot until lap 6, when Ryan Cook jumped to the outside of him to grab the lead. Ryan would pull away on the final 9 laps to claim the victory over his brother Jason Cook. Mitrisin would finish in 3rd, Ross McCombs was 4th, with TJ Criss rounding out the top 5. Matt Greiner, Mitrisin and R.Cook picked up heat race wins.

The B-Modified feature saw a new face in the winners circle, with Mark Preston picking up the win in the 12 lap feature. Preston came from his 3rd place starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 of the feature. He would hold the top spot for the entire race and held off several challenges from Bob Woodrow, who started 8th, on the final laps to pick up his first win of 2004 at Memphis. Wyatt Lantz was 3rd, Terry Houston came from 10th to finish in 4th, with Tony Olson rounding out the top 5. Heat race winners were Woodrow, Rob Carter and Cliff Powell.

Thirty-nine Hobby Stocks signed in to due battle for a spot in the 24 car feature. Roger Krieger grab the lead from his front row starting spot in the 12 lap feature, with Abe Huls, Jeff Soper and Matt Snyder battling for second. Krieger would hold the top spot until lap 5 when Snyder got into the back of him and spun him, both drivers had to go to the tail. Huls would inherit the lead on the restart and then held off Jeff Soper on the final 7 laps to claim his first win of 2004 at the speedway. Brandon Symmonds came from 8th to finish 3rd, Bobby Greene charged from 20th to finish in 4th, with Tony Becerra rounding out the top 5. Brad Weber, Jeff Soper, Krieger, Greg Johnson and Huls claimed heat race wins, while Greene picked up the semi win.

David Hudson moved out front on lap 1 of the 10 lap Cruiser feature, with Bill O'Haver close behind in second. Hudson would lead all 10 laps to pick up the win. Craid Spilker was 2nd, Jody Small was 3rd, Eric Begheger came from 10th to finish in 4th, with Amy Mason coming from 12th to round out the top 5. Heat race winners were Hudson and Shawn Crowell.

The 10 lap Hornet feature saw Brent Forest jump out front on the start, with Tyler Schulte close behind in second. Tyler would slip by Forest on lap 2 to take over the top spot and then led until lap 8, when a tire came off in turn two. Dennis Schulte, who started 7th, inherited the lead on the restart and then held off Gordon Blankenship, who started 9th, to claim the feature win. Wayne Noble was 3rd, Forest slipped to 4th, with Rick Miller coming from 14th to round out the top 5. T.Schulte and Blankenship picked up heat race wins.

The next event scheduled for the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway will be October 16th, weather permitting. Modifieds, Stock Cars, B-Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, Cruisers and Hornets will be action.
