Shryock completes O’Reilly USMTS sweep at Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- On Saturday night at the Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the top Modified drivers in the nation were on hand to tackle the big half-mile dirt oval on the second of two nights for the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series "Greiner Buildings Iowa Spring Classic."

In the 30-lap Holley "A" Main, the front row was the same as Friday night with Kelly Shryock drawing lucky no. 1 and Corey Dripps drawing the outside of the front row.

When the green flag flew, Dripps led the first lap but the caution came out. On the restart, Shryock worked the bottom side of the speedway to take the race lead back on lap 2. The yellow flag flew again on the next lap for a large crash on the back stretch which sidelined Jason Hughes, Jim Lynch and Brian Edel.

For Hughes, who finished second behind Shryock on Friday night, the "big one" signaled the end of a frustrating evening. A blown motor in the heat race put the Colcord, Okla., driver in the "B" Main where he worked his way through the field before being sidelined again with motor problems. After taking a provisional starting spot in the main event Hughes had passed six cars in less than two laps before his night ended with his no. 12 Hughes Chassis modified on the hook of the tow truck.

Six-time and defending O’Reilly USMTS champion Shryock led the field to the restart and began to stretch out his lead over the field. Mark Noble tested Shryock early before leaving the track with a flat tire, and Al Hejna made it close for a brief period before Roger Hadan of Omaha, Neb., moved into the runner-up spot on lap 18 and began to put the pressure on Shryock.

Shryock and Hadan ran nose to tail through the next seven laps until Hadan's engine expired with five laps to go. Shryock cruised to the checkers from there, capturing the $3,000 payday and taking a clean sweep for the weekend.

The runner-up spot went to Rochester, Minn., driver Mike Sorensen with Dripps in third and Hejna in fourth.

The Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger Award went to Brad McEwan, who started 24th and finished 8th in the 24-car feature field.

Next week's O’Reilly USMTS show at the Fox Ridge Speedway in Arcadia, Wis., has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date. Therefore, the ninth and tenth races of the Wanders Automotive & Machine Swing #1 will now be held on Friday and Saturday, April 22-23, at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., for the USMTS Missouri Spring Challenge.
