Gustin scores thrilling ’Hunt’ victory at Monett
MONETT, Mo. – If the youth are our future, then the future looks good for the fans of the United States Modified Touring Series.
Wednesday night at the Monett Speedway featured a pair of talented teenagers battling a veteran duo for the victory in the second event of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship.
Randy Timms set the pace early in the show by earning the AFCO Pole Award, then snagged the lead at the drop of the green flag in the 40-lap Sunoco “A” Main.
Before a lap could be completed, fellow front row starter Jackie Dalton lost control of his Modified in turn 2, which caused a chain reaction of swerving and slowing racecars. When the dust settled, USMTS Southern Series points leader Jason Hughes was the only casualty of the melee as his Modified returned to the pit area on the hook of the wrecker.
Timms again secured the lead on the restart with 19-year-old Rodney Sanders and Ryan Gustin, 18, giving chase. After 16 caution-free laps, Sanders snuck his nose underneath Timms and stole the top spot to lead lap 17.
With Sanders holding on to a six-car-length advantage over Gustin, the yellow flag waved with six laps to go. On the restart, Sanders returned to his preferred low line while Gustin continued to chew away on the extreme high side of the 3/8-mile clay oval.
For the next two laps, the two raced door to door with Gustin leading by a nose as they crossed beneath the flagstand to complete lap 38. The race's final caution flag waved, however, to set up a green-white-checkered sprint to the finish.
Terry Phillips disposed of Sanders to take over second place with one lap to go, then set his sights on Gustin. Phillips took a look to the inside of Gustin as the two came out of the final corner to the checkered flag, but Gustin's strong top-side run carried him past Phillips to secure the victory with a half-car-length to spare.
In his first trip to Monett, the win was worth $3,000 to Gustin and was his fourth main event win of the season. At the age of 17, Gustin's first win in August of last year gave him the honor of being the youngest driver to ever win a USMTS-sanctioned event.
Sanders took home the third-place paycheck while Timms held on for fourth. Glenn Bratti grabbed fifth, Brian Williams was sixth and Dustin Boney took seventh.
Kelly Shryock earned the PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award by racing from 22nd on the starting grid to a eighth-place finish at the end of the 40-lapper.
Al Hejna was slated to start 11th, but a wheel came off of his Modified during the warm-up laps and forced him to enter the pits for repairs. The "A-Train" returned to start at the back of the 26-car field and clawed his way to a ninth-place showing.
Jeremy Payne came from 20th to finish round out the top-10 finishers.
Shryock's prolific passing in the main event helped keep him atop the points in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship. Shryock now leads Sanders by 38 points (271 to 233), while Dereck Ramirez jumped to third with 208 markers. Jon Tesch is fourth with 201, followed by Hejna (187), Gustin (185), Grant Junghans (184), Zack VanderBeek (170), Corey Dripps (164) and Tommy Myer (161).
Tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 13) will find the mud-slinging touring titans at the Springfield Raceway in Springfield, Mo., for another $3,000-to-win affair. Gates open at 5:00, hot laps begin at 7:00 and the green flag waves to start the first heat race at 7:30. Sport Mods and Legends Cars will also be on the racing card.
Race fans can pick up $2-off coupons on Thursday at all four Casey's General Stores locations in Springfield. Fans can meet USMTS driver Zack VanderBeek and see his new Modified sponsored by Doritos at the Casey's General Store located 4124 W. Chestnut Expressway from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Check out www.caseys.com for more information or to find the location nearest you.
