Countdown to The Hunt: USMTS returns to Mississippi Thunder Speedway Tuesday
FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. – The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour stormed into the Mississippi Thunder Speedway for a $2,000-to-win event on Friday, June 25, but they blew right back out after the three heat races were complete when heavy rains engulfed the track several hours earlier than forecasted.
The event has been rescheduled for this Tuesday, July 13. Grandstand tickets and pit wristbands that were purchased at the rained-out event will be good for this Tuesday. If you are unable to attend Tuesday night’s program, your other option is to use your “rain check” for the USMTS “Hunt” race on Friday, Aug. 20.
Kelly Shryock will be driving the NAPA Auto Parts “Two-Seater” Modified during intermission. The nine-time USMTS National Champion will be taking one lucky fan on a three-lap ride at full speed. Raffle tickets for the unique rim-riding experience will be on sale for $2 through the end of the heat races before one lucky fan will get the ride of his or her life!
Todd Scharkey captured the inaugural event at the former Tri-Oval Speedway on June 8, 2007, and Shryock picked up the win when the series returned the following month. Mother Nature won the first scheduled stop during the 2008 season and Al Hejna won on Aug. 15, 2008, in the final event staged on the tri-oval configuration.
In 2009, veteran Modified racer Bob Timm took over the reigns of the racetrack. Timm’s new role as promoter brought a new configuration, new clay surface and a new name. The facility was renamed Mississippi Thunder Speedway and gone was the sweeping tri-oval shape in favor of a high-banked 1/3-mile oval. On May 25, 2009, Ryan Gustin won in dominating fashion, and then followed Tim Donlinger across the finish line on Aug. 21 during the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship.
Most of the tireless USMTS touring titans will be coming off a well-deserved summer vacation of nearly three weeks before returning to action at Bob Timm’s speedplant in Fountain City, Wis., for the first of five straight nights of racing.
Pit gates will open at 3:30 p.m., grandstand gates open at 5:30, hot laps are slated to begin at 6:40 and the first heat race will take to the track at 7 p.m. Also on the racing card will be USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods racing for track and national points in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series, plus WISSOTA Street Stocks and Mini Mods.
Action moves to the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn., on Wednesday, July 14, then to the North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minn., on Thursday, July 15. The week wraps up on Friday and Saturday, July 16-17, at the 2nd Annual AMSOIL Dirt Nationals at the Elko Speedway in Elko, Minn.
Once they fire ‘em back up, the campaign doesn’t let up again until the 12th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree, Sept. 23-25. The 2010 Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship begins in just one month on Aug. 12 at the Great American Dirt Track in Jetmore, Kan.
The Mississippi Thunder Speedway is located 3.0 miles north of Fountain City on SR 35. For more information, call 608-687-3282 or visit www.mississippithunder.com on the World Wide Web.
