Myer, USMTS drivers dominate opening night in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- With 94 Modifieds from 13 states checked in for the 11th Annual Mesilla Valley Transportation Fall Nationals, USMTS veteran Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., turned his first ever trip to the Southern New Mexico Speedway into a flag-to-flag victory in Friday night’s preliminary 20-lap A-Main.

Myer took the lead from fellow front row starter Johnny Bone Jr. at the start, withstood a pair of cautions early in the event and then drove away to put his #65 GRT on the pole for Sunday’s 50-lap, $10,000-to-win A-Main.

Bone ducked in behind Myer and ran second to the checkered with Bumper Jones third and John Anderson fourth.

Last year’s winner and 2010 DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year on the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Tour campaign, Johnny Scott slipped by nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock late in the going to claim the fifth and final transfer spot into Sunday’s weekend finale.

Anderson, however, did not stop on the front straight-away immediately after the checkered flag and was relegated to the sixth finishing spot, moving Scott up to fourth and putting Shryock into the fifth and final transfer spot into the feature event.

Rodney Sanders, Alex Stanford, Tommy Weder Jr., Robert Adams and Stormy Scott rounded out the top-10, giving USMTS drivers eight of the first ten finishing positions.

Tim Donlinger, Zack VanderBeek, Steve Miller, 2010 USMTS National Champion Jason Hughes and Terry Phillips also made Friday night's main event, but will have to try again in Saturday's qualifications.

Other licensed USMTS in attendance include Jimmy Ray, Lucas Schott, Jeremy Payne, Alan Sharpensteen, Derek Ramirez, Ryan Gustin, Dustin Hyde, Bobby Malchus, Morgan Bagley, Corey Dripps and Chase Junghans.
