Booth takes big step toward dream, makes USMTS debut next weekend at Houston Raceway Park

PARIS, Texas -- A debut race in the United States Modified Touring Series is a marquee achievement for any race driver, but for Paris, Texas’ Danny Booth, next weekend’s 4th Annual Texas Winter Nationals at the Houston Raceway Park will be a memorable event that Booth hopes marks the prequel of a dream he’s had for several years.

The dream alluded to is Booth’s aspiration to run the full USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour – a grueling 80-plus racing series that travels to 12 states throughout America’s heartland.

The USMTS is a series Booth has had his eye on for a number of years, especially while serving as a contractor in support of the U.S. military in Iraq, where he spent the last five years before returning to the states in August.

Booth says he wants to use his Modified racing as a support structure for the troops that he views so vitally important to America’s safety.

“Spending five years in Iraq, I saw firsthand what these soldiers go through,” Booth said. “There are so many giving their lives up and changing their lives for our country, and it really inspired me. Seeing them on a daily basis, it really made me want to come back and show my appreciation. I want to use my race team to do that.”

“TheMaverick,” as Booth is nicknamed, adds that although his objective is clear, he’s not exactly sure how he’ll accomplish it.

“I just want (the troops) to know I’m out here racing in support of them. I want to share it. A lot of soldiers are race fans or they used to race or be on pit crews, and I want them to know my racing is in support of the U.S. military and their efforts. We have ‘Support the Troops’ signage on the hauler and racecar and on shirts, and of course they can follow our efforts on my facebook and Web site. We plan to do more; we just have to figure it all out,” he said.

Before determining all that his team will do to support the troops, Booth has next weekend’s Winter Nationals on his mind. His USMTS debut comes in the series’ 2010 season finale, and the 39-year-old wheelman has realistic expectations heading into the Nov. 18-20 show in Baytown, Texas.

“I would like to say we can go out there and contend, and with more seat time I think we could. But truthfully, we’d be really happy to qualify for the features,” Booth admitted. “This car is so advanced technology-wise and I have to catch up to it. If we qualify, it’ll be a good weekend. If we don’t, it’ll be good experience.”

Booth, a former motocross racer with Modified experience before he left for Iraq, worked tirelessly overseas to build his racing fund that he hoped would lead him to a shot at a full-time USMTS endeavor.

The native Texan has one race under his belt in the last five years, which came Oct. 16 at Grayson County Speedway in Bells, Texas, where his No. 4B was involved in a night-ending accident while running third in a heat race.

Booth’s second event on his comeback tour comes in the form of the big three-day show at the fast high-banked quarter-mile dirt oval, a venue that Booth hopes to frequent several more times in 2011 as a full-time competitor on the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour.
