Scott snags second straight win in USMTS Southern Speedweek curtain-closer

VIVIAN, La. – Winning can be addictive, and it appears that Johnny Scott has become a full-fledged victory lane junkie after just a single dosage.

After winning his career-first USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series event on Saturday night, the 20-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., wasted no time defending his legitimacy as he scored a wire-to-wire win Sunday night at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La.

Some may have thought Scott “inherited” his win Saturday when the two winningest drivers this season – Jason Hughes and Ryan Gustin – both dropped out of the main event along with 15 of the other 24 starters.

On Saturday, Scott had to win the second Real Racing Wheels “B” Main in order to garner the 14th starting spot before getting by 13 of his competitors in the WIX Filters “A” Main en route to a trip to the winners circle.

On Sunday, Scott drew the pole position for the nightcap, and then held off both Hughes and Gustin through four caution flags and the entire 40-lap duration of the main event to pocket his second $2,000 top prize in as many nights.

Lee Patton chased the leaders and wound up fourth behind Gustin while Jason Armstrong racked up his second top-10 finish in a row with his fifth-place showing.

Chris Henigan rebounded from a spin on lap 6 to finish sixth, Rodney Sanders passed six cars to take seventh, Shane Hebert was eighth, John O Whittington wound up ninth and Randy Timms completed the top-10 at the finish line.

For Timms, it was his fourth top-10 finish during the four-race 4th Annual USMTS Southern Speedweek after drawing the eighth starting spot each of the four nights.

With his runner-up finish, Hughes was able to put more distance between himself and his pursuers in the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series points standings. He now leads Kelly Shryock by 198 points (1231 to 1039) with 13 races in the books. With 989 markers, Timms solidified his place in third, followed by Sanders (960), Morgan Bagley (933), Bumper Jones (891), Gustin (859), Steve Holzkamper (850), Whittington (829) and Steven Whiteaker Jr. (796).

With his first-place finish, Scott expanded his lead in the Dustin Duncan Memorial “Just Say Yes” Rookie of the Year points over Rory Jordan, Tracy Denby Jr., Troy Seidl and Ben Stephens.

Mullins Race Engines tops the COMP Cams Engine Builder of the Year points while Hughes Racing Chassis enjoys a comfortable lead in the Chassis Builders Championship points after sweeping the four weekend events.

The USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series is on hiatus until the final rush of 12 events in October and November. Up next on the schedule is a tripleheader of events in the Lone Star State on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8-10, at the Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Houston Raceway Park in Baytown and 105 Motor Speedway in Cleveland.

On the other hand, the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour is back in action this Tuesday, June 15, at the Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont, Minn., for the first of eight blockbuster events over the course of 11 days:
