HUMBOLDT, Kan.—With 11 of 14 qualifying heat races in the books Thursday, a slight drizzle evolved into a steady rain and forced the postponement of the remainder of Round 1 at the King of America V Modified Nationals presented by Chix Gear Racewear until Friday night.

Although an abbreviated program, fans in attendance and watching live online were treated to more than 180 laps of intense action as United States Modified Touring Series drivers fought tooth and nail to secure a spot in Saturday’s 100-lap, $10,000-to-win main event.

Rain on Wednesday night pushed practice night back to Thursday morning, so early bird race fans got even more bang for their buck.

After completion of the first round of qualifying Thursday night, some familiar faces and a few surprises were atop the points standings for the 82 entrants.

Unofficially, the top five points-earners in Round 1 were Joe Adams of Enid, Okla.; Jake Timm of Winona, Minn.; Lucas Lee of Paris, Tenn.; Jason Hughes of Watts, Okla.; and Chris Brown of Spring, Texas.

Adams was most impressive, racing from the eight starting spot to win his 10-lap qualifying heat with a late-race pass of race-long leader Brock Bauman of Eureka, Ill.

Other heat race winners in Round 1 were nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock, 2012 King of America winner Stormy Scott, Lee, Joe Duvall, Hughes and two-time USMTS National Champion Ryan Gustin, who captured the King of America crown in 2013.

In the four qualifying heats completed in Round 2, checkers fell for Dereck Ramirez, Travis Saurer, Jeremy Payne and Terry Phillips prior to the rain falling.

The remainder of Thursday’s program, which includes the three remaining qualifying heats from Round 2 plus a 20-lap USRA B-Mod main event, will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Each driver will run four heat races from four different starting positions. Passing points will be combined for each driver using his best three of four attempts. The top 12 in overall points will be locked into the first six rows of Saturday’s “A” Main.

The winner of Saturday’s 100-lap main event will earn $10,000 while every driver making the big dance will pocket no less than $1,000 to start the race.
