Tesch wins at Thunderhill

STURGEON BAY, Wis. -- Watertown, S.D.’s Jon Tesch won the 40-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series main event Wednesday night at the Thunderhill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. Tesch, who started fourth row inside, charged to the front and took the lead on lap 11 and never looked back.

Tesch’s victory earned him $2,000. Forest County Potawatomi and WAPL where the sponsors.

Al Hejna, fresh off a win on Tuesday night in Antigo, looked like the man to beat early on in the O’Reilly USMTS feature until Nick Anvelink shot to the inside. Anvelink and Hejna had a classic battle going on, allowing Jon Tesch to move closer to the top pair. Anvelink then secured the lead and started to pull away from the rest of the field.

A caution for John Logue on lap 7 grouped the whole pack back together. Anvelink used the low line to pull away again on the restart, while Tesch moved to the outside part of the track and caught Anvelink.

“I was watching the B main events and saw that cars where able to pass using the outside,” Tesch said. “I put a set-up in that would allow me to run the top better.”

Tesch made the pass on lap 11 and powered away.

On lap 20, O’Reilly USMTS points leader Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, moved inside Anvelink and made the pass. A series of cautions with 10 laps to go kept the field close, but on the restarts Tesch was able to pull away and pick up the win.

At the checkers, Tesch was followed by Shryock, Anvelink, Sean Jerovetz of Little Suamico and Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn.
