Myer wins Wisconsin Summer Nationals at Fox Ridge Speedway

ARCADIA, Wis. -- The O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series rolled into Arcadia, Wis., Friday night for the Wisconsin Summer Nationals at Fox Ridge Speedway. The O’Reilly USMTS, which pitted a band of top-level traveling drivers against the regular crop of Fox Ridge racers, provided for some excellent action on the big 3/8-mile.

Ten local regulars made the starting field for the 24-car main event, showing that the field of local racers was strong enough to compete with the traveling group.

With the drop of the green flag, Storm Lake, Iowa’s Brad McEwan jumped from his starting spot on the inside of the front row and began his domination of the race. Winona, Minn.’s Karl Fenske challenged for the lead on the opening laps but quickly became embroiled in several battles to simply remain near the front of the field.

While McEwan led, the crowd’s attention was focused deeper in the field as Colcord, Okla.’s Jason Hughes -- the 2004 winner of this O’Reilly USMTS event at Fox Ridge -– put on a masterful display of working the field.

Starting dead last in the starting line-up -– compliments of a series provisional starting spot after he failed to even qualify for the event via his heat race or a last chance "B" main qualifying race -– Hughes worked the field with a complex combination of skill, patience and aggression when necessary.

By the time the checkered flag waived, Hughes had stunned the rest of the field with an impressive third-place finish.

But the real eye opener came from Blooming Prairie, Minn.’s Tommy Myer. Myer battled at the front of the field the entire night but never once got up alongside McEwan’s #26 to actually challenge for the lead. Lap after lap, over the second half of the feature, Myer raced just off the rear end of McEwen, several times taking a look to the inside and showing his nose, but never actually challenging for the lead.

Then, with three laps to go, Myer turned it up a notch, cleared McEwan down low in turn 4 and pulled away to an almost-easy half-straight-away lead. The checkered flag and the $2,000 winner’s check went to Myer with his #65 resting in victory lane.

Regular weekly competitor Bob Timm was the highest local in the finishing order with a sixth-place finish.
