Shryock dominates at Denison for fourth straight O’Reilly USMTS win

DENISON, Iowa -- When you're hot, you're hot.

The hottest week of the summer found the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series at the big, fast half-mile oval at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison, Iowa, on Wednesday. As the sun set behind the grandstands, the fans got relief from the 100-degree heat, but the drivers got no relief from the hottest driver in Modified racing -- Kelly Shryock.

After dominating the second heat race from the sixth starting spot, the six-time defending O’Reilly USMTS champion garnered the most Home Pride Passing Points in qualifying for the "A" main. With the top 8 points-earners re-drawing for their positions in the "A" main line-up, Shryock showed he also had luck on his side as he drew the #1 starting spot.

From the drop of the green flag to start the main event, it was all Shryock as the Fertile, Iowa pilot paced the field through five cautions and 30 laps to grab his fourth straight O’Reilly USMTS win, and 11th of the season.

A late-race caution allowed Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D. to get a run on the high side around Shryock turns 1-2, but Shryock closed the door for good down the backstretch and maintained the lead to the checkered flag. Tesch held on for the runner-up spot with "B" main winner Ryan Ruter of Kanawha, Iowa, coming from 13the to finish third. Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa finished fourth while Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn. stated and finished fifth.

UP NEXT: On Thursday, July 21, the "Best of the Best" will have their hands full at the 3/10-mile bullring of the Interstate Speedway in Jefferson, S.D. Local ace Jay Noteboom, who won at Park Jefferson on May 26, will be among the favorites to have a chance at knocking off the touring road warriors in Weatherton Contracting/KPTH Fox44 50-lap main event. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7. Interstate Speedway is located just off of I-29 at Exit 4, then 0.2 mile east to SR 105, then 1.7 miles north (on the west side of SR 105).
