Shryock rockets to Humboldt Speedway victory

HUMBOLDT, Kan. -- Kelly Shryock's seemingly unstoppable steamroller kept on rolling Friday as he captured the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series victory at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan.

Twenty-four of the fastest Modifieds anywhere started the Holley "A" Main, with Blooming Prairie, Minn., driver Tommy Myer on the pole. Myer led the first six laps, then relinquished the lead to Forest City, Iowa's Ryan Ruter for laps 7-9 before snagging the top spot back again. Myer set a torrid paced over the next 14 laps before a caution flag for local ace Justin Folk slowed the action with six laps to go in the 30-lapper.

Shryock was relentless and navigated through a substantial mass of lapped traffic to track Myer down. With two circuits remaining, the seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champ made his move around Myer and went on to capture the win and $2,000 share of the purse. It was his ninth win in 19 starts this season.

Myer finished in the runner-up position, while Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., started 15th and finished third. Ruter clinched fourth.

Multi-time Humboldt winner and crowd favorite Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., came through one of the Real Racing Wheels "B" Mains to start 21st before grabbing a fifth-place finish at the checkered flag. With 16 cars passed, Hughes was the hands-down winner of the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.

On Saturday, the O’Reilly USMTS returns to the Lebanon I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, Mo., for one final time this season, followed by the second and final visit of the season to the Monett Speedway in Monett, Mo. on Sunday, June 18. After a travel day on Monday, the “Best of the Best” invade the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa, for the Inaugural Allison Clash on Tuesday, June 20. Then on Wednesday, June 21, the stars and cars of the O’Reilly USMTS make their long-awaited return to the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa, for the 2nd Annual Howard County Fair Summer Classic. On Thursday, June 22, the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, plays host to the 2nd Annual Corning Shootout while the eight-day swing wraps up with a bang on Friday, June 23, with the debut of the O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds at the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
