Shryock scores 11th O’Reilly USMTS win at Corning

CORNING, Iowa -- Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, turned in his second dominating performance in as many nights Thursday with a victory in the 2nd Annual Corning Shootout at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa. The win was the 11th in 23 starts for the seven-time defending O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series national champ.

Fresh off of a win at the Cresco (Iowa) Speedway on Wednesday night, Shryock started Thursday night's 30-lap Holley "A" Main from the pole, but initially surrendered the lead to Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, winner of last September's O’Reilly USMTS go at the half-mile Adams County Fairgrounds oval. Hejna's reign was short-lived, however, as Shryock scooted past Hejna in turn 3 to lead lap 4.

From there, Shryock extended his lead to a full straight-away over the field before a caution with three laps remaining gave hope to the chasing pack of Modifieds. However, none of the 24 starters had anything for Shryock on this night, and he drove away from his competition to take the checkered flag and the $2,000 top prize.

Hejna finished second after a fierce battle for the runner-up paycheck with Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D. After the final restart, Dean Mahlstedt of Clear Lake, Iowa, was also able to get around Tesch to secure third place. Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., rounded out the top-5 finishers.

Mahlstedt also garnered the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger Honors for passing 15 cars from his 18th starting spot on the grid.

Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn., came from 14th to finish sixth and was able to maintain his points lead in the O’Reilly USMTS Western Region.

Seven nights of racing over eight days wraps up with a bang on Friday, June 23, with the debut of the O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds at the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
