Arpin captures rain-delayed Featherlite Fall Jamboree opener

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Due to rain on Thursday, the opener of the 8th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., was moved to the end of the weekend line-up on Sunday, Sept. 24. On Friday and Saturday, the only two drivers from the State of Illinois walked away with the winner's share of the purse. On Sunday, it was the lone Canadian entrant rising to the top as Steve Arpin grabbed the checkers to become the third first-time winner of the weekend.

Arpin, who started eighth in Sunday's 24-car, 30-lap main event, worked the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval to perfection as he reeled in race-long leader Jim Horejsi of Echo, Minn., with 11 laps to go and went on to capture the $2,000 top prize. the 22-year-old from Fort Frances, Ont., Canada (now residing in nearby Rochester, Minn.) held off the late-race challenges of Clear Lake, Iowa's Al Hejna to pick up his career-first O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series victory.

Friday's feature winner, Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., finished third to round out an impressive weekend where he also finished sixth on Saturday night. Seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, finished fourth after starting 14th on the grid to claim his third top-5 finish of the weekend, while veteran another former Featherlite Fall Jamboree champion, Willy Kraft of Lakefield, Minn., rounded out the top-5 finishers in Sunday's finale.

Sunday's program also featured the $2,000-to-win Non-Qualifiers "A" Main, with Mike Steensma of Luverne, Minn., taking the checkers ahead of Les Duellman of Winona, Minn.; Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla.; Dustin Boney of Tonganoxie, Kan.; and Osceola, Wis.'s Jason Miller.

Next up for the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors will be a return to the half-mile oval at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6-7. The 2nd Annual Hawkeye Clash will pay $2,000 and $3,000 to win, respectively, each night.

The event will be a pivotal point in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly National Championship as the first two races of the final six races of the season. Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, leads Shryock heading into the next event (762 to 721), while Watertown, S.D.'s Jon Tesch sits third with 711 points, followed by Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn. (697) and Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb. (679).

More information about the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series is available by calling (515) 832-7944 or online at www.usmts.com. The Deer Creek Speedway is located 11.3 miles south of I-90 (exit 209) on US 63 (0.7 mile north of SR 16).
