Brown takes down USMTS Southern Series win at 105 Speedway

CLEVELAND, Texas -- Chris Brown led from start to finish Sunday night to capture his first USMTS Southern Series main event in a 35-lapper at the 105 Speedway in his hometown of Cleveland, Texas. The event wrapped up a successful three-race weekend and the inaugural Rinehart Trucking Texas Shootout.

The win was worth $2,000 to Brown and gave a sweep of the weekend's events to the Skyrocket Nation. On Friday at the Motorama Speedway, eight-time defending O'Reilly USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, captured the win while Greg Skaggs of Bixby, Okla., won Saturday's go at the Gator Motorplex. All three drivers were piloting machines with a Skyrocket Chassis, which are built by Shryock.

Brown's most important move of the night might have been the redraw where he picked up the pole position. By feature time, the track settled into a single-groove circuit where passing was at a premium. Nonetheless, Brown sped away from the field at the start and on several restarts following caution periods to take an uncontested win.

Paul White of Temple, Texas, took home he runner-up paycheck while Tim Clonch of Quinlan, Texas, finished third to give the Lone Star State pilots a monopoly of the podium. Bobby Malchus finished fourth while Skaggs hung on for fifth.

Shryock finished seventh after starting 12th and was able to edge Skaggs by a mere two points in the three-day points battle for the Rinehart Trucking Texas Shootout. With the additional $500 in bonus money, Shryock brought his weekend earnings to $4,700 despite scoring his first finish outside of the top-5 in the first seven contests of the USMTS Southern Series slate. Skaggs pocketed an extra $300 for his weekend efforts while Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., earned an additional $200 for winding up third in the final Rinehart Trucking Texas Shootout points.

Shryock continues to top the USMTS Southern Series rankings with 717 points, while Holzkamper sits second with 560. Rounding out the top-10 are Skaggs (556), Zack VanderBeek (541), Randy Timms (529), Tommy Weder Jr. (515), Rodney Sanders (494), Jason Hughes (471), Jamie Burford (444) and David Mitchell (432).

Up next for the USMTS Southern Series will be a weekend doubleheader at the Batesville (Ark.) Speedway on Friday and Saturday, May 11-12. Friday's main event winner will earn $2,000 while a $3,000 payday awaits Saturday's victory lane visitor. The Batesville Speedway is a 3/8-mile semi-banked dirt oval located 8.0 miles west of Batesville at the junction of SR 14 and SR 25 on Heber Springs Rd.
