Shryock halfway to Memorial Day Weekend sweep

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Eight-time defending O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series national champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, emerged victorious Saturday after a spirited battle with Zumbrota's Brad Waits in 5th Annual Greenway Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn. The win was worth $2,000 to Shryock, who also captured Friday night's feature race at the Murray County Speedway in Slayton, Minn., to claim the first two races of the four-race Memorial Day Weekend.

Starting from the outside of row 1 in the 40-lap Holley "A" Main, Shryock grabbed the lead from polesitter Corey Dripps at the drop of the green flag, then set a torrid pace over the next 20 laps. Racing in heavy lapped traffic on lap 24, Waits brought the crowd to their feet as he slipped by "The King" of the O’Reilly USMTS to lead lap 25. Oklahoma's Jason Hughes also closed in to make it a three-car race for the lead, but Shryock was able to maneuver back into the top spot on lap 28. From there, Shryock kept Waits at bay to pick up his sixth O’Reilly USMTS National Event victory in 11 starts and extend his lead and pad his points lead in the Yeager Machine Northeast Region.

Clear Lake, Iowa, pilots Mike Hejna and Dean Mahlstedt finished fourth and fifth, respectively, behind the top-3 of Shryock, Waits and Hughes. Greg Skaggs, Layne Meyer, Steve Arpin, Bob Timm and Mike Sorensen rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., raced from 19th on the starting grid to finish 11th and earn the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.

Shryock continues atop the O’Reilly USMTS national standings with a healthy margin over last year's runner-up, Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon. In the Yeager Machine Northeast Region, Shryock leads with 207 points over Holzkamper (169), Josh Reisch (161), Skaggs (158) and Texan Chris Brown (157).

Set your TIVO to record the Indy 500 and World 600 because the best racing on Sunday will be at the Kasson Speedway for the 6th Annual Minnesota Spring Fling. Located less than 42 miles from the Deer Creek Speedway, gates at the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Kasson will open at 2 p.m., with hot laps at 4:45 and racing at 5. For more info, call (651) 226-3706 or (507) 634-6400 on raceday or visit www.kassonspeedway.com online.

Just a short 28-mile drive down the road from Kasson, the whirlwind weekend will wrap up with the triumphant return of the O’Reilly USMTS for the 4th Annual Memorial Day Shootout at the Steele County Speedway in Owatonna on Monday, May 28. Gates are slated to open at 3 p.m., hot laps are at 5 and the mud starts flying at 5:30. The Steele County Speedway is a 1/2-mile semi-banked dirt oval located 1.0 mile east of I-35 on US 14, then 1.2 miles north on CR 45 (at the Steele County Fairgrounds).
