Skaggs scores in O’Reilly USMTS battle at Bolivar

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Race No. 2 in The Hunt for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship found the rugged road warriors of the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series at the Bolivar Speedway USA in Bolivar, Mo. Friday night's event was the seventh time the Series had visited the fast 3/8-mile high-banked oval in Southern Missouri, and for the seventh time a new face graced victory lane.

An impressive 13 different States were represented among the 38 drivers entered in Friday night's action.

Polesitter Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., grabbed the lead at the start of the 40-lap Holley “A” Main but his reign was short-lived as Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., shot ahead of Holzkamper to lead lap 2. Myer set a pace too torrid for the rest of the field and extended his lead each lap until the race's only caution flag waved on lap 13. Unfortunately for Myer, the caution was for him as his No. 65 BC Chassis limped to a stop with a flat tire.

With Myer rejoining the contest at the rear of the field for the restart, Greg Skaggs of Bixby, Okla., assumed the top spot. Skaggs, who started 10th on the 24-car grid, sailed from there as he led to final 27 laps in his No. 27 Skyrocket to garner his third O’Reilly USMTS National Event win of the season and claim the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors. The win was worth $2,000 and propelled him from 12th to 3rd in ‘The Hunt’ standings.

Eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, finished a close second, with Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo., getting around Colcord, Okla.'s Jason Hughes for third. Myer remained perhaps the fastest car on the track as he clawed his way back to a fifth-place finish. Johnny bone Jr., Jason Krohn, R.C. Whitwell, AFCO Pole Award winner Dean Mahlstedt and Tommy Weder Jr. rounded out the top-10.

Shryock's runner-up finish helped him extend his lead over Hughes (249 to 220) in The Hunt for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. Skaggs jumped to third with 202 points and Weder moved up one spot to fourth with 196. Rounding out the top-10 are Zack VanderBeek (195), Myer (183), Jon Tesch (182), Krohn (178), Mahlstedt (175) and Holzkamper (162).

UP NEXT: Saturday finds the O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, Mo., for the third race of ‘The Hunt’ and another $2,000-to-win race. The weekend wraps up at the Monett Speedway in Monett, Mo., for the fourth race of ‘The Hunt’ and another $2,000 top prize up for grabs. Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 for both shows.
