Mahlstedt motors to Featherlite Fall Jamboree victory; Krohn secures O’Reilly USMTS National Championship

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. — Dean Mahlstedt of Clear Lake, Iowa, passed polesitter Kelly Shryock on lap 37, then led the final 13 laps to pocket $6,000 and pick up the win Saturday night at the 9th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn. It was Mahlstedt's career-first victory at Deer Creek as he became the ninth different champion in nine events.

While Shryock had to settle for the runner-up paycheck of $4,000, Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn., grabbed third. With his third-place finish, Krohn captured the 2007 O’Reilly USMTS National Championship, dethroning Shryock after an eight-year reign as champion.

Shryock came into the night wit a steep mountain to climb to be in contention for his ninth O’Reilly USMTS title. If he qualified for the A Main from his heat race, there would not be enough passing points available in the A Main for him to overtake Krohn, so Shryock had to decide whether to “sandbag” and get into the main event through a B Main, or go for the heat race win and give himself the best opportunity to win his second Featherlite Fall Jamboree.

The eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS National Champion's choice became obvious in his heat race. Starting 13th, the Fertile, Iowa, veteran powered his way trough the field to finish a close second. Not only did his finish put Shryock in the main event, it gave him the most passing points of the night among the 110 entrants and a spot in the redraw among the top-9 passing points earners.

As the drivers in the main event were introduced to the crowd, Shryock was first to draw for his starting position. Shryock made his selection from the nine face-down Frisbees, stood up, smiled and spoke into the microphone: “Number one.” The standing-room-only crowd erupted and Brad Waits of Zumbrota, Minn., stepped forward as the next driver to draw. “Two,” he announced as he turned over his Frisbee and the crowd exploded into cheers.

Krohn, who scored a win on Thursday and a third-place finish Friday, made the seventh selection and garnered the outside position for the three-wide front row starting line-up. The redraw gave the fans a power-packed front row with the defending O’Reilly USMTS National Champion, the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series national points leader and the current O’Reilly USMTS national points leader starting door to door for the 50-lap finale.

Shryock motored into the lead at the drop of the green flag and set a torrid pace, extending his lead to six car-lengths over Krohn by the 10th lap, with Mahlstedt slipping under Waits to take third. With 20 laps in the books, Shryock had doubled his advantage over the field as he sliced his way through heavy lapped traffic, but a caution on lap 24 erased his advantage and bunched up the field.

While Krohn maintained the runner-up spot, the caution had waved for seventh-starting Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., who was battling for third with Mahlstedt and Waits for third. The only driver left with a shot at overtaking Krohn for the points title, Hughes' spin and resulting tire change sent him to the rear of the field for the restart and dashed his hopes for a victory.

Back under green, Mahlstedt used the low groove to get around Krohn, then set his sights on Shryock. On lap 30, Shryock led Mahlstedt, who was searching everywhere on the track for a faster groove to get around the leader. Krohn maintained the third spot while Johnny Bone Jr., who started 17th, came up to battle Waits for fourth. Meanwhile, Greg Skaggs, who started 28th, huggy-poled his way to challenge Mike Sorensen for a spot in the top-10.

Coming out of turn 4 to complete lap 38, Mahlstedt made his move as he muscled his way past Shryock coming to the flagstand. Once out front, Mahlstedt extended his advantage each lap until a caution with five to go slowed the action. Mahlstedt pulled away on the restart, but another caution two laps later bunched up the field for a three-lap shootout to the end.

Mahlstedt got a good jump o the restart and pulled away from Shryock again as he won going away to earn the biggest win of his career. Shryock took second, followed by Krohn, Tim Donlinger and Bone. Zack VanderBeek finished sixth, while Jon Tesch, Waits, Todd Scharkey and Sorensen rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Although Hughes was able to claw his way back to a 12th-place finish, Krohn's third-place finish solidified his title as the 2007 O'Reilly USMTS National Champion. Hughes nipped Shryock by 11 points to finish second in the final standings, with Tesch taking fourth and Tommy Myer fifth. VanderBeek, Tommy Weder Jr., Skaggs, Steve Holzkamper and Scott Green completed the top-10 rankings in The Hunt for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship.

Prior to Saturday's curtain-closer, Steve Wetzstein of West Concord, Minn., pocketed $2,000 as he captured the 25-lap Non-Qualifers Main after a crowd-pleasing battle with Nate Wasmund of Rochester, Minn. Polesitter Josh Reisch of Luverne, Minn., finished third, followed by Jay Ihrke of Dover, Minn., and Marshalltown, Iowa's Ryan Gustin.

With his win on Saturday, Mahlstedt kept the streak of no-repeat winners going at the Featherlite Fall Jamboree — nine different winners in nine years. Along with Krohn, who won Thursday's main event, and Friday's winner, Tesch, three first-time Deer Creek Speedway winners emerged during the weekend.

The Featherlite Fall Jamboree was made possible by the great racers and fans, as well as our event sponsors: Featherlite, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, 61 Marine and Sport, Dirt Doctor Trucking and Haulmark Motorcoaches.
