Krohn captures Guttormson Memorial at Chateau Raceway

Krohn captures Guttormson Memorial at Chateau Raceway

LANSING, Minn. – Defending O’Reilly USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn started 16th in Friday night's main event at the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., but was up to second place in just 15 laps. However, it took a caution on lap 20 to give the Slayton, Minn., farmer the break he needed to score a win in the 11th Annual Guttormson Memorial.

Josh Reisch of Luverne, Minn., drew the pole position for the feature race, and proved he deserved to be there by leading the first 23 laps. Working lapped traffic masterfully, Reisch looked like a sure bet to pick up his first O’Reilly USMTS National Tour victory with a full straight-away lead over the field at the halfway point of the 40-lapper before a caution flag slowed the action and bunched up the field.

On the restart, Reisch was pressured hard by Krohn and Tim Donlinger of Rochester, Minn., who bested Krohn in the second Real Racing Wheels “B” Main earlier in the evening to earn a berth in the 24-car Holley “A” Main. When Reisch bobbled in turn 1 after completing lap 23, Krohn took advantage of the opening and scooted past Reisch on the low side of the tight 1/3-mile clay oval.

Reisch stayed on Krohn's bumper for the next three laps while holding Donlinger and eight-time O’Reilly USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock at bay. Donlinger was able to get a nose under Reisch on lap 27, which resulted in a flat left rear tire on Reisch's Modified and ended his hopes of a win.

For the rest of the distance, Donlinger tried high and low to get around Krohn, while Shryock stayed close to the leaders. But Krohn was able to weather the challenges and went on to score his second O’Reilly USMTS National Tour win of the season.

Donlinger and Shryock were second and third at the finish line to give Skyrocketeers a sweep of the podium, with Steve Wetzstein of West Concord, Minn., fourth, and 18th-starting Zack VanderBeek rounding out the top-5 finishers. 20th-starting Al Hejna, 22nd-starting Jay Noteboom, Dereck Ramirez, Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar Rookie of the Year points leader Brandon Kenny and Kevin Pittman completed the top-10.

The win, worth $2,000, propelled Krohn into the Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region points lead over Donlinger (204 to 200). Shryock is just three markers behind Donlinger, followed by VanderBeek (178), Hejna (174), Tommy Myer (171), Wetzstein (164), Pittman (158), Jason Hughes (148) and Noteboom (146).
