First trip to LaSalle nets first win of 2008 for Hejna

First trip to LaSalle nets first win of 2008 for Hejna

LaSALLE, Ill. – The O’Reilly USMTS National Tour invaded the LaSalle Speedway in LaSalle, Ill., for the first time Saturday, for the inaugural Frostbuster. Originally slated for April 12, the rain-delayed event saw Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, lead all 35 laps of the main event, which was stopped short of the scheduled 40-lap distance when rain began to fall on the speedway after 35 orbits.

The “A-Train” was dominant from the get-go, winning his heat and scoring the AFCO Pole Award before re-drawing the outside of the front row for the Holley "A" Main. Hejna quickly disposed of polesitter Chad Kinder at the drop of the green flag, then held off the challenges of Jason Hughes to take his first O’Reilly USMTS National Tour victory since July 19 last year.

Perhaps Hejna's toughest challenger watched the end of the race from the pits. Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, started ninth in the main event and had passed both Hughes and Kinder, along with Kelly Shryock, Ron Ver Beek and Alan Mondus by lap 18 to move into the runner-up spot. On lap 22, however, Gustin pulled off the track with a flat tire to end his run at his first O’Reilly USMTS National Tour triumph.

Hughes finished second with Kinder bringing home a third-place paycheck. Zack VanderBeek raced from 11th on the starting grid to finish fourth while 13th-starting Dereck Ramirez rounded out the top-5. Local ace Donovan Lodge grabbed sixth, followed by Shryock, Vince Cooper, Ray Bollinger and Joe Adam.

Coupled with his runner-up finish at the Southern Iowa Speedway ten days ago, Hejna moved into the points lead in the Central States Region with two of the 11 regional events in the books. Hejna leads Hughes by 16 markers (203 to 187), with VanderBeek in third with 179 points. Fourth through 10th are Ramirez (173), Shryock (168), Gustin (145), Lodge (145), Ver Beek (138), Colt Mather (133) and Mondus (110).

Also rain-delayed from April, the 2nd Annual Spring Clash will take place at the Quad City Raceway in East Moline, Ill., on Sunday night. Also on the racing card will be IMCA Late Models, UMP Street Stocks and UMP 4-Cylinders. Pit gates and grandstands open at 4 p.m. Hot laps begin at 5:30 and the first green flag is slated to wave at 6 p.m.

The Quad City Raceway is a high-banked quarter-mile clay oval located off I-80 at Exit 7, then 0.9 mile west, then right, then 4.2 miles west on Colona Rd., then east on Archer St. (at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds). For race day information, call 309-644-1977 or visit the track's Official Website at www.quadcityraceway.com.

The USMTS is celebrating its 10th Anniversary Season in 2008 with many special promotions to show thanks to the fans, drivers, team members, families and sponsors who have helped make the USMTS the premier dirt modified series in the nation.
