Bone breaks through at Chatham; Nineteen drivers qualified for ‘The Hunt’

CHATHAM, La. – Southern Speedweek wrapped up Saturday at Fast Trax Speedway in Chatham, La., with the fifth different winner emerging during the five-day, five-track stretch.

From the pole position, Johnny Bone Jr. of Pea Ridge, Ark., led every lap and picked up his first O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series victory in his 21st start. His last win under the USMTS banner came on June 15 last year during an O’Reilly USMTS National Tour event, and Saturday's $2,000 triumph was his seventh overall since scoring his career-first win in 2001.

Points leader Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., grabbed the runner-up finish in the 35-lap Holley “A” Main, with Tommy Weder Jr. of Woodward, Okla., garnering third. Defending O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series champ and eight-time O’Reilly USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, was fourth and rookie contender Elias Anderson of Austin, Texas, rounded out the top-5 to record his best finish with the series.

AFCO Pole Award winner Timothy Culp was sixth, while Michael Robertson, Eddie Martin, Brandon Kenny and Dustin Hyde finished seventh through tenth, respectively.

Hughes stretched his points lead over Steve Holzkamper (1295 to 1209), while Weder has 1141 and closed the gap slightly on Holzkamper over the past two nights. Dustin Duncan Memorial “Just Say Yes” Rookie of the Year points leader John O Whittington is fourth with 985 points, followed by Paul White (958), Dereck Ramirez (905), Brandon Kenny (895), Shane Hebert (890), Bryan Rowland (873) and Hyde (846).

HUNTING SEASON:

Those ten drivers, along with nine others who have achieved perfect attendance through 14 races so far, comprise the first group of drivers officially qualified for the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship.

‘The Hunt’ will be comprised of the final 14-18 O’Reilly USMTS National Tour races of the season, beginning Aug. 8 at the Midway Speedway in Lebanon, Mo., and ending Sept. 22 during the 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn. Any driver finishing among the top-10 in points or having perfect attendance in the any of the four regions of the O'Reilly USMTS National Tour or to-date in the O'Reilly USMTS Southern Series, is qualified for ‘The Hunt’.

The Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship serves as a “playoff” for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. Any of the qualified drivers have a legitimate shot at capturing the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship.

The 19 drivers qualified for the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship are Jason Hughes, Steve Holzkamper, Tommy Weder Jr., John O Whittington, Paul White, Dereck Ramirez, Brandon Kenny, Shane Hebert, Bryan Rowland, Dustin Hyde, Jamie Burford, Rodney Sanders, David Mitchell, Morgan Bagley, Scott Green, Timothy Culp, Steven Whiteaker Jr., Jeremy Ross and Jeff Huckaby.

UP NEXT:

The O’Reilly USMTS National Tour will return to action on Tuesday, June 10, for the 3rd Annual Ruter Farms Spring Challenge at the Hancock County Speedway in Britt, Iowa, and will kick off four straight nights of racing in the ultra-tough Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region.

The next event for the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series will take place on Friday, Aug. 22 for an encore performance at the Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, followed by another return engagement at the Gator Motorplex on Saturday, Aug. 23.

The USMTS is celebrating its 10th Anniversary Season in 2008 with many special promotions to show thanks to the fans, drivers, team members, families and sponsors who have helped make the USMTS the premier dirt modified series in the nation.
