Shryock cruises to Corning victory

CORNING, Iowa – Eight-time O'Reilly USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, collected his ninth main event win of the season Tuesday with a dominating performance at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa.

The $2,000 triumph was his second straight and third overall at the half-mile oval, and also propelled him into the points lead of the Central States Region over on-track rival and competitive Modified chassis builder Jason Hughes.

After earning the AFCO Pole Award following the four heat races, Hughes drew the pole position for the 30-lap Holley "A" Main. Initially, outside front row starter Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., gained the advantage at the start, but a quick caution realigned the field for another two-by-two start.

This time Hughes out-raced Tesch into the first turn and secured the top spot. The Westville, Okla., ace looked strong in leading the first three laps, but Shryock shot past Hughes down the back stretch to gain the lead.

Shryock continued to show the way over the next 16 laps while Hughes stayed within four car-lengths of the leader's rear bumper. On lap 21, lapped traffic slowed Shryock's momentum as Hughes pulled alongside in turn 2.

With Hughes stalking Shryock, the race's second and final caution waved with eight laps to go to set up an apparent shoot-out to the finish between the two drivers who had captured exactly half of the 28 O'Reilly USMTS National Tour events this year.

But the shoot-out turned into a blow-out as Shryock opened up a big advantage on the restart, then sped away from the field to win going away.

Hughes faded to third at the finish while Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, maneuvered his Casey's General Store/Cheetos machine into the runner-up spot behind his fellow Skyrocket pilot.

Tesch, who won the inaugural USMTS event at Corning in 2004, finished fourth while last year's Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar Rookie of the Year, Scott Green of Derby, Kan., took fifth ahead of 2008 rookie contender Dereck Ramirez of Woodward, Okla.

Teenage phenom Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, earned the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award as he finished seventh after starting 19th on the 24-car grid. Another teen sensation, Jake Neal of Omaha, Neb., finished eighth, with Oskaloosa, Iowa's Ron Ver Beek in ninth. NASCAR veteran Kenny Wallace rounded out the top-10 finishers.

The action continues tomorrow at the Murray County Speedway, Slayton, Minn., for the 5th Annual Minnesota Spring Challenge presented by DeBoer Chevrolet. Wednesday's titanic tilt at the 3/8-mile semi-banked clay oval will be the final points race in the Great Plains Region, and will once again feature Kenny Wallace in his second of three straight nights with the rugged road warriors of the O'Reilly USMTS National Tour.

Pit gates will open at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 7 and the first heat race is at 7:30. Also on the racing card will be USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks racing for track and national points in the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series.

The Murray County Speedway is located on the west side of Slayton on SR 30, then 0.8 mile south on Juniper Ave. For more information, call the track hotline at (507) 393-3075 or visit www.murraycountyspeedway.net online.
