Sanders seeks Masters title, 119th USMTS win this weekend

Sanders seeks Masters title, 119th USMTS win this weekend

Those with a keen eye for talent already knew what we all know now when a 19-year-old Rodney Sanders captured his first USMTS victory at the LA Raceway in La Monte, Mo., on June 26, 2009.

He's not just good, but one of the best to ever grip a steering wheel and churn the clay of America's dirt ovals.

Now married with children, the 34-year-old from Happy, Texas, possesses 20 percent of the championship trophies handed out by the United States Modified Touring Series in the first 25 years of the most popular series on dirt.

Heck, the first series title for Sanders didn't happen until 2013 and he's won four more since then, giving him five of the last 11 including last year's Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt which earned him $100,000.

Sanders is third on the USMTS all-time wins list with 118 victories. Kelly Shryock leads ‘em all with 182 career triumphs and Jason Hughes, who finished second to Sanders in that race at the LA Raceway, is second with 40 more wins than ‘The Rocket.'

Between the three, they own 18 of the 25 USMTS national championships, and have recorded wins in every race considered a “crown jewel” of the series.

Rodney Sanders stands in victory lane after winning his first USMTS main event on June 26, 2009.

One of those is The Masters, and no driver has had more success inside the golden guardrails of the Cedar Lake Speedway than Sanders with seven of his career triumphs happening here.

Sanders looks to add another triumph this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 13-15, when the legendary clay oval in New Richmond, Wis., hosts the 25th Annual Masters which features both USMTS Modifieds and Super Late Models racing for the same money each night. USRA Late Models are also on the card all three days.

The legendary event features both USMTS Modifieds and Super Late Models racing for the same money each night. USRA Late Models are also on the card all three days.

The show kicks off Thursday with $3,000-to-win main events for the USMTS Modifieds and Super Late Models, followed by $5,000-to-win contests on Friday. The finales on Saturday pay a whopping top prize of $12,000 to the triumphant driver in each class.

USRA Late Models will also run a complete program each night with $600 to win Thursday and Friday before climbing to a $1,000 top prize on Saturday, and all three nights will award Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points.

Camping for the weekend is just $50 for all days and is available at the racetrack starting Thursday morning. Fans can purchase tickets in advance and/or reserve camping spots at ticketpeak.co/cedarlake/subscriptions_and_flex_passes.
