USMTS rocks Granite City on Sunday

This event has been rained out.

Mother Nature put the kibosh to Saturday’s Masters finale, but the USMTS Modified mega-monsters aren’t done this weekend.

Sunday, June 16, features a $5,000-to-win clash for the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt at the Granite City Motor Park in Sauk Rapids, Minn.

It’ll be another shootout in the Collins Brothers Towing USMTS North Region presented by Featherlite for the stars and cars of the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt.

The track first opened in 1955. Aron Peterson bought the Golden Spike Speedway in 1978, and then he and his family ran the track for 29 years before selling it in 2007.

In 2011, the facility was purchased  by GRC Properties in St. Cloud, and many improvements followed at the rebranded Granite City Speedway including remodeled VIP suites and a new restaurant area for fans. Frequent USMTS announcer Chris Stepan was named the General Manager.

The inaugural visit for the USMTS on June 14, 2012, was rained out but the series returned three months later on Sept. 9 with Stormy Scott snagging the first win here.

The series returned Aug. 18, 2013, with Rodney Sanders outlasting the field to bring home the checkered flag.

After nearly 11 years, the series returns Sunday to the 1/3-mile dirt oval.

The pits are scheduled to open at 3 p.m. with grandstands gates opening at 4:30. The drivers meeting takes place at 5:15 with hot laps at 5:30 and racing at 6.

General admission grandstand tickets are $25 for big kids ages 12 and older while little kids ages 3-11 are just $10 with children under the age of 3 admitted for free. Pit passes are $40.
