USMTS goes topless at Route 66 Motor Speedway

After a five-year hiatus from the Route 66 Motor Speedway, the USMTS Modified return to the 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval in Amarillo, Texas, on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4-5, for the 11th Annual Amarillo Ambush.

This year's clash will feature a special look as all racecars will be topless, giving the fans a unique view as the saw the wheel as they cut through wind.

Overall, this will be the 13th matchup between the Best of the Best in dirt modified racing and the tough regional USRA Modified racers in Texas and New Mexico.

Past USMTS events have played out in front of standing-room-only crowds at the popular racing destination in the Texas panhandle. The facility boasts seating for more than 4,000 race fans plus handicapped parking, stadium lighting, full concessions and several luxurious V.I.P. booths.

The track's racing surface is a generous 75 feet wide in the turns with 20 degrees of banking, and 65 feet wide down the straight-aways with five degrees of banking. The pits have concrete pads available with lighting and water.

Hometown favorite Rodney Sanders, originally from nearby Happy, Texas, captured the inaugural event here in 2010 and added a second trophy to his case in 2015 before adding a series-best third triumph in the 2018 stop.

Other winners here include Kelly Shryock, Jason Hughes, Randy Timms, Ryan Gustin and Stormy Scott, who won back-to-back races in 2013-2014.

Fresh off a $50,000 victory last weekend in Texas, and his second Featherlite Fall Jamboree triumph at the end of August, the 21-year-old from Osage, Iowa, comes into the 11th Annual Amarillo ambush as the national points leader in the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt.
