Sanders leads USMTS invasion of Minnesota

The Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt is set to tear up the dirt in Minnesota with a thrilling four-night showdown from July 17-20, across the Gopher State.

Leading the charge is points leader Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas, who's gunning for his sixth national title and looking to add to his staggering 126 career USMTS wins.

With four unique ovals, hefty purses and fierce competition, this week promises heart-pounding action for dirt track fans.

Kicking off the blitz on Thursday, July 17, the Fairmont Raceway hosts the 11th Annual Summer Spectacular powered by Bettin Trucking. The half-mile high-banked dirt oval offers $3,000 to the winner and $455 to start. Sanders, a two-time winner at Fairmont (2014, 2024), knows this track well and will look to dominate as he did last year.

A full night of racing is on tap at the Martin County Fairgrounds, with USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners competing for track, region and national points in the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series.

Fairmont Raceway is a 1/2-mile high-banked dirt oval located at 1300 N Bixby Rd, Fairmont, MN 56031. for more information, check out www.fmtraceway.com.

On Friday, July 18, the series makes its debut at Princeton Speedway for the first night of the 5th Annual Mod Wars featuring USMTS vs Wissota Modifieds. The quarter-mile high-banked clay oval will award $5,000 to the winner and $700 to start. Super Stocks, Midwest Mods, Street Stocks, Mod Fours and Hornets are also on the card.

The Princeton Speedway is a 1/4-mile high-banked clay oval located at 1400 3rd Street N, Princeton, MN 55371. For more information, surf on over to www.princetonspeedway.com.

The action shifts to where the first four years of Mod Wars were waged, as the Ogilvie Raceway hosts the second night of Mod Wars presented by Architect Mechanical and Blaine Brothers on Saturday, July 19. This half-mile high-banked dirt oval boasts a $5,000 winner's prize and $900 to start. Sanders, who has yet to claim a USMTS win at Ogilvie, faces stiff competition from past winners and legit locals.

To make things even crazier, 'The Big O' will have the Wissota Late Model Challenge Series in action on the same night, and complete shows for Midwest Modifieds and Mod Fours.

The Ogilvie Speedway is a 1/2-mile high-banked dirt oval located at 1539 Hwy 23, Ogilvie, MN 56358. More info is available at www.ogilvieraceway.com.

The Minnesota marathon wraps up on Sunday, July 20, at Granite City Motor Park in Sauk Rapids, Minn., for the third and final night of Mod Wars. The half-mile high-banked dirt oval offers $5,000 to win and $600 to start. Sanders, a 2013 winner at Granite City, will aim to add another trophy to his collection on this gritty track.

Wissota Midwest Mods and Crown Vics will round out the four-division event. The Granite City Motor Park is located at 2540 Golden Spike Rd NE, Sauk Rapids, MN 56379. For more facts, check out www.gc-motorpark.com.

Sanders, 35, leads the points standings with 1,548 points and five wins this season with precision honed since his first USMTS victory in 2009.

Hot on his heels is Jim Chisholm of Osage, Iowa, the 2024 national champion, with 1,427 points and three wins. Chisholm, 21, banked nearly $90,000 last year with eight victories and is hungry to defend his crown.

Tanner Mullens of Wichita, Kan., sits third with 1,382 points and one win, known for his blazing starts, had a bumpy start to his season but has since proven himself a worthy target.

Kyle Strickler of Mooresville, N.C., holds fourth with 1,369 points and three wins, fresh off his victory at the Amarillo Ambush. Rounding out the top five is Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., with 1,258 points, a veteran still seeking his first win of 2025 but a consistent threat.
