Hughes, White pick up USMTS Holley A-main wins in Oklahoma and Missouri

SALINA, Okla. -- The United States Modified Touring Series made a visit to the Salina Highbanks for a rescheduled race from back in May after Mother Nature washed out the whole weekend races. The USMTS was to visit Muskogee, OK on Friday, but track officials cancelled this race one month prior to the date. So the USMTS kept the Salina and Monett, MO race on the schedule and fans was treated to some great modified action. Jason Hughes picked up his ninth Holley A-main win of the season after starting the race from the eighth spot in the main event. The race started with George White Fort Worth, TX jumping out into the early lead. White who started the race third took the top spot from Tommy Myer and didn’t take long to put some distance between the two drivers. White who had a ten car length lead was catching lap traffic quicky. White went into turn three with the lapped car of Ron Emmerson to the inside. Something broke on the Emmerson car sending him into the side of White and knocking both cars off the track. White would get pulled back on the track and have a flat tire. White would change the tire and get back on the track in time to start the race from the tail. Myer would inherit the lead back with a very hard charging Kelly Shryock and Jason Hughes right behind Myer on the start. Hughes wouldn’t take long to get around Myer and the two drivers would race side by side for five laps before Hughes would finally get by and put some distance between himself and Myer. Shryock would get by Myer finish second with Myer finishing third. Chris Moore and George White would round out the top five. White had worked his way back to third before going high in three and four letting Myer and Moore back by. Picking up Kevko Heat Race wins were Hughes, Shryock, White and Randy Frailey. Harris Auto Racing B-mains were won by Eddie Martin and Chris Moore. On Sunday the series moved back to the Monett Speedway in Monett, MO and George White finally picked up his first ever USMTS Holley A-main after being close several times before having some troubles late in the race. White started the race from the fourth spot and took the lead from AFCO pole sitter Jim Small on lap six. White would once again put some distance between the rest of the cars and Jason Hughes who started seventh would work his way to second and reel in the Wayne Larson Chassis of George White. White and Hughes would have a good race going until Hughes would go to the bottom of the track and get into the wheel of White. Hughes would go flying off turn three bring out the caution flag. Hughes night would end while White would retain the lead. Six laps was all that remained when this happened. The race would resume with White, Tommy Myer, and Kelly Shryock as the top three cars. John Allen in his new Hughes car would jump into fourth place and start putting some heavy pressure on Shryock when a flat tire would end his evening. White would pick up his first USMTS Holley A-main and pocket the $2000 paycheck. Rounding out the top five was Myer, Shryock, Steve Muilenburg, and Brad McEwan. The final two races of the USMTS southern region will be held October 1-2 at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, MO. This race will pay $2000 to win on Friday night and $3000 to win on Saturday.
